TOUR IN HONG KONG (8 JULY 2012)

The conference will organize a tour on 8 July, 2012. It is optional and those who are interested can choose one of the following three tours guided by anthropology postgraduate students and teachers at CUHK. Two of the tours are mainly outdoor and one is indoor. July in Hong Kong is generally very hot (over 30 C). If you are very sensitive to heat, you are recommended to take the museum tour.

(1) Kowloon Tour

The Kowloon Tour starts in Sham Shui Po exploring a poorer area in Hong Kong, followed by a walk in Mongkok, which is one of the most vital spots in Hong Kong, as well as a center of youth culture. The last stop of the tour is the center of “low-end globalization” in Hong Kong, Chungking Mansions, a building where African and South Asian traders come to buy Chinese goods. Participants will eat dinner there at an Indian restaurant.

(2) Museum Tour

The Museum Tour features the Hong Kong History Museum in Tsim Sha Tsui. Participants will have a chance to get to know Hong Kong's history through the exhibition of "The Story of Hong Kong."  Tsim Sha Tsui offers a wide variety of museum choices, and if time allows, participants can also visit the the Science Museum and perhaps the Art Museum. The tour will end with a dinner at Chungking Mansions.

(3) Hong Kong Island Tour

The Hong Kong Tour brings the participants to Central, on Hong Kong Island, to explore both the cityscape and the colonial history of Hong Kong. Some of the sights that will be seen include the Legislative Council, the St. John’s Cathedral, the Bank of China, and the International Financial Centre. Afterwards, participants will take the ferry across Victoria Harbor to Tsim Sha Tsui to have dinner in Chungking Mansions.
