Overview:

The objective of the PhD Programme in Gender Studies is to encourage further investigation of teaching and research in gender studies in East and Southeast Asian societies at an advanced level. It allows students to bring together different disciplinary and methodological approaches for the advancement of gender studies. The programme emphasizes both theoretical knowledge and research skills. Students may study full-time or part-time.

 

Applicants may come from a variety of backgrounds, including but not limited to anthropology, cultural studies, history, journalism, literature, nursing, political sciences, psychology, religion, sociology, and other allied fields.


Programme of Studies:

Minimum units required for graduation are 21. They include required courses and elective courses:

Graduates of the CUHK M.Phil. Programme in Gender Studies may be exempted from Advanced Topics in Gender Studies I and Advanced Topics in Gender Studies II.

Qualifying Examination

All PhD students must pass written qualifying examinations in two areas: (1) theory and methodology in gender studies and (2) a specific field/subject of study related to their thesis research.

 

Thesis

A thesis that makes an original contribution to scholarship is required for graduation. The requirements and conventions of the supervisor’s discipline will govern the length and style of the thesis. Awarding of a PhD degree is based on the thesis as well as an oral examination.

 

Duration:

Full-time: 3 years (students with a research master’s degree); 4 years (students without a research master’s degree)

Part-time: 64 months

 

Tuition Fee:

Full-time: HK$42,100 (per annum)

Part-time: HK$31,575 (per annum)

Application Guidelines:

  1. Applicants should meet general admission requirements of the Graduate School, including the English language proficiency requirement. For details, please visit http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/gss/admission/gen_qual_admi.html.

  2. In addition to the general qualifications required for admissions to the PhD Programme of the Graduate School, applicants should (1) have some knowledge of gender studies, (2) have good background in their intended field of concentration.

  3. Applicants can submit application through the internet at https://www.gradsch.cuhk.edu.hk/onlineapp/programme_list.aspx?FAC=INF.

  4. On their application materials, applicants must also indicate the subject discipline for which they wish to be considered.

  5. Applicants should send (i) a research proposal; (ii) two confidential recommendations; (iii) Official Transcripts from the University attended; (iv) Copies of Degree Certificates; (v) Copies of Identity card or Passport; (vi) proofs of fulfilling the English Language Proficiency Requirement; and (vii) CV or other proofs of qualification (optional) to the Gender Studies Programme Office. Guidelines for Writing a Research Proposal:
Your proposal should be approximately 900 to 1500 words. It should be typed (done on a computer) and double-spaced, with one-inch margins on all sides. The purpose of the proposal is briefly to describe to the Committee the research project you wish to pursue in our programme. A brief description of the intended research topic, objectives, and methods should be presented. The proposal should include the following:

  1. What is the topic of your proposed study? What questions do you wish to address?

  2. Why is this topic important and why does it interest you? You are not expected to offer a full survey of the literature, but if possible, do indicate how your research will differ from research that has already been done.

  3. Briefly, what methodology do you propose to use in your research?
