Programme Overview

The goal of the programme is to teach students the basic theories and methods of social and cultural anthropology and to give them a broad understanding of anthropology's conventional topics. Students should learn to develop their abilities of critical, independent and creative thinking in analyzing contemporary social and political issues, and understanding the diversity of human cultures and societies.

A key feature and major advantage of the Programme is that students are able to pursue courses that fit their background and interest. For example, foreign students can concentrate on Chinese society and culture, while students working in museums can concentrate on the anthropology of tourism, museums, archaeology, and other areas relevant to their work.

Who Should Apply

The M.A. Programme is designed for people who have not majored in anthropology but wish to receive a formal education in the discipline. Work experience is desirable, so that students can better relate coursework to their profession. Candidates with a strong background in social sciences may wish to concentrate on one of the Department's specializations such as the Anthropology of East Asia or Ethnicity and Identity.

Programme Curriculum

Twenty-four units (eight 3-credit courses) and a written examination are required for graduation. Nine units are in three required courses: ANT 5010B Seminars in Anthropological Theory and ANT 5610 Anthropological Methods, and ANT 5380 Seminars in General Anthropology. The remaining five courses can be selected from other taught courses in consultation with an advisor.

ANT 5000 level courses are designed for M.A. students. Some are specifically designed for graduate students. In others, the students attend the applicable ANT 2-3000 level course's lectures, which provide the basic orientation to the subject. In addition, they have more required readings (normally a book a week in addition to the textbook chapter or article(s) assigned to undergraduate students), will take an essay exam, and must write a research paper or an annotated bibliography. Students in ANT 5000 level courses do not attend the 2-3000 level tutorials, but meet with the course instructor as needed. There is no thesis required for the M.A., but research papers or annotated bibliographies are required of all 5000-level courses. Students are encouraged to take any graduate electives offered, but Directed Studies (as offered in the M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes) will not, in principle, be offered to M.A. students unless it is already being taught to research programme students and the extra M.A. student(s) will not add to the teaching load.

Degree requirements can be completed in as short a time as one academic year of full-time study, but can be spread over three years. Part-time students can earn the degree in two years, or spread the courses over four years. Prospective part-time students bear in mind that many courses may be offered only on weekdays and not on evenings or Saturdays. A typical course sequence is as follows:

The General Anthropology Exam

The General Anthropology Exam is a three hour exam based in part on a department reading list. These books and articles highlight the conventional topics of anthropology. The students are encouraged to take courses that help prepare them for the exam. The exam is given once each semester in December and May. Students are expected to take the exam after completing their coursework. Students who wish to take the exam must submit a request in writing to the Graduate Division at the beginning of the semester. The examination is graded by three faculty members on a pass-fail basis. Examiners are selected by the Graduate Division. Students failing the exam are permitted to re-take it only once. In the case of a second failure, a student will have to discontinue his or her studies.

Admission

Candidates for admission into the M.A. Programme should meet all Graduate School qualification criteria such as bachelors' degrees with second degree honors (lower) or better. The programme is intended for intelligent students with university degrees and work experience in other areas (nursing, journalism, social work, engineering, finance) eager to learn about anthropology. In unusual cases, students with lower grades may be considered for the programme, but they must offer a justification in their application. Students who have attended a university outside of Hong Kong whose language of instruction is not English should have a TOEFL score of 550 or above (213 or above for the computer-based test). All students will be interviewed as part of the admission process. Past academic performance, work experience, references, motivation (as shown in interview) and language ability will all be considered in the admission decision.

Tuition Fee

HK$ 56,000 per annum (Full-time)
HK$ 30,000 per annum (Part-time)

Length of Study

The minimum length of study for the M.A. is one year (two semesters) for full-time students, two years (four semesters) for part-time students. The maximum length of study is three years (six semesters) for full-time students, four years (eight semesters) for part-time students. Prospective part-time students should remember that many courses will not be offered in the evenings or on Saturdays, but only on weekdays; it may thus be quite difficult to combine part-time study with a full-time work schedule.
