Department
of Biology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong has been
doing teaching and research on fungi for over 30 years and
gained worldwide reputation. The mushroom cultivation
complex is a UGC granted system to The Chinese
University of Hong Kong as the sole institution in Hong
Kong focusing on research and development on edible and
medicinal mushrooms. This complex locates in Chung Chi campus
houses a research laboratory, three enviromentally-controlled
rooms for growing mushrooms at 0-40oC using solid-state-fermentation
technology, one autoclave room, one composting yard and
one store room. Beside autoclaving as a sterilization system,
pasteurization system is equipped so that mushroom cultivation
can be of a state-of-the art module or a rural module. This
mushroom cultivation complex contributes significantly to
field of bioconversion, bioremediation, organic farming
and basic studies on mushroom development.
