Assembly Rules and Regulations

Students are called to their attention for the following for a smooth conduct of college assembly that benefit all.

1.      The assembly is conducted at 11:30 am until 1:15 pm, the 4th and 5th sessions of class on every Friday during term time. Students are required to attend at least half of the total assemblies which are divided into two parts. For instance among the total thirteen assemblies (the first part has seven and second part has six) in the both semesters of this academic year (2008-09), students are required to attend at least seven assemblies, of which three have to be from the second part.

2.   Please be punctual and take your seat between 11:00 - 11:15 am if you can. The door of the chapel will be closed at 11:30 am when the assembly begins. Those who come late should wait quietly outside the chapel and be ushered for their seats after the hymn singing and before scripture reading. After that all late arrivals are considered to be absent from the assembly. Students are encouraged to fill up the front rows first. The balcony will be open only after the ground floor is filled up. Additional seats are provided in LT2 in Sino Building, LT3 in Wong Foo Yuan Building and LT4 in Chen Kou Bun Building to accommodate overflowing audience to make sure students have a comfortable environment in the chapel.

3.      For security reason students are not allowed to sit on the staircase in the balcony.

4.      According to the University guidelines, the 4th and 5th sessions of every Friday are scheduled for the assembly. Students are not supposed to register other courses at the above time and violation of which will be directed to the Office of Registry for investigation.

5.      During the conduct of the assembly students should keep quiet as a respect and deference to the College, assembly, guest speakers, and other attendees. Assembly is an integral part of college general education and its venue is akin to classroom. As such students should keep quiet and refrain from talking, playing and other improper behavior as in the classroom. Students should attend to the advice given by the staff who have the duty to guard for the rights of other attendees who do not want to be disturbed by improper behavior such as the use of cell phones, reading, sleeping, listening to audio devices, drinking, intimacy and talking. Disciplinary action will be taken against anybody who violates the above in the following steps:

(a) The student concerned will be issued a warning note and requested to surrender his/her student identity card for record which will be returned to them at the end of the assembly. If more than one violation is committed during the same assembly or during any other assemblies of the same semester, the student is requested to attend one more assembly. The extra assembly is meant to enhance his/her appreciation of general education. If the student does not cooperate with the staff in surrendering his/her student identity card and engage in impolite provocation with the staff, he/she may be asked to leave the venue. The case will then be brought to the attention of college disciplinary committee.

(b) For the third violation within the same semester the student will be issued a warning letter by the Dean of Students, with a copy sent to college coordinator of his/ her Department and the Dean of General Education for record purpose.

(c) For the fourth violation within the same semester, a FF grade will be given on his/ her record in the transcript.

The Assemblies Committee will review the above rules from time to time.

6.      Late arrival (after the hymn singing), unauthorized early withdrawal or enforced dismissal because of creating disturbances are considered to be absent from the assembly.

7.      Students may check their record of attendance by login the Assembly Attendance Enquiry System with their student identity card number and access PIN from the webpage http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/ccc/assembly, within seven days after the assembly. Request for rectification should be addressed to the Assemblies Committee via the Office of the Dean of Students within fourteen days after the assembly concerned beyond which the request will be not entertained.

8.      Student organizations that intend to make announcements during the assembly or to set up booths and deliver promotion materials in the chapel vicinity should apply for approval with the Chaplain¡¦s Office at least three days before the assembly.

P.S.: The Chinese version of these Rules and Regulations shall prevail wherever there is any discrepancy between the Chinese and English versions.
