Centre for East Asian Studies

The Centre for East Asian Studies at the Chinese University of Hong Kong strives to familiarize students from around the world with East Asian Cultures via interdisciplinary undergraduate and postgraduate programs taught and examined in English. Affiliated Centre faculty are distinguished scholars in their fields and teach and conduct research in a variety of disciplines, including Anthropology, Economics, Fine Arts, Government and Political Administration, History, Linguistics, Management and Marketing, Psychology, Sociology, Literature and Film.

The Centre focuses on Chinese Studies at present, with plans to extend into other East Asian cultures in future. Both the undergraduate and postgraduate programs provide a broad foundation for understanding the complexities of China and Chinese culture. Core courses equip students with a framework for study, while an extensive list of elective courses accommodates a range of interests. While all programs are conducted in English, students are encouraged to take Chinese language courses (Mandarin and/or Cantonese) at the Universityˇ¦s Chinese Language Center. Additionally, the Chinese University is a bilingual institution and offers many opportunities for students to practice their Chinese skills in a variety of settings on campus. Those students with a strong command of Chinese may, with the permission of the Program Director, choose electives from the wider range of courses on China taught in Chinese.

The China Program promotes cross-cultural and interdisciplinary understanding of China. Our curriculum is designed to enhance studentsˇ¦ career potential ˇV students with career aspirations in the public and private sectors, in business and academia, study together in an environment that values diversity and collaboration. If Chinese Studies interests you, we encourage you to join us for further study here in Hong Kong, the gateway to China.
