Introduction

Chinese Studies is one of the strategic areas of development for CUHK. Chinese Language is the key to the area studies and career development of students, whether they are local, mainland Chinese or international students. Having taught Chinese Language for more than 4 decades, CLC becomes the biggest Chinese language training unit in teaching Chinese as a second Language (CSL) among all tertiary institutions in Hong Kong and can be regarded as a competitive edge of CUHK in undergraduate student admission. CLC offers a variety of Putonghua and Cantonese programmes from elementary to advance level. As long as reasonable course time, aptitude and effort have been invested into the learning, a local student can attain advanced Putonghua level and get reasonable score in language proficiency exams, such as the COPA exam developed by CLC and the national Putonghua test.

On the other hand, CLC is the only unit in the university that runs substantial credit-bearing courses for both UGC funded programmes and life-long learning (continuing education) programmes. The information day will serve the purpose of ¡§killing two birds with one stone¡¨: not only to reach out just to undergraduate prospects, but also to the public who may eventually become part of our family in the continuing education sector, whether native or non-native Chinese speakers.
