Background: LAMS

The Learning Activity Management System (LAMS) is an easy-to-use authoring and delivery system designed to support collaborative online learning activities. It can be used with students in tutorials and lab sessions, with distance students, and even in lectures. LAMS is open source software being developed at Macquarie University in Australia as a new eLearning tool.

LAMS provides educators with a highly intuitive visual authoring environment for creating sequences of learning activities, rather than isolated learning objects or online exercises. The activities that can be included in the sequences range from those that mainly involve computer-student interactions (e.g. quizzes) to those that encourage social interactions (e.g. forums, and peer-reviewing of assignments or journals). The building of sequences involves easy drag-and-drop actions. LAMS is also a good lesson planning tool, since the system supports the teacher in planning learning experiences for students ahead of time in a step-by-step fashion.

LAMS@CUHK

LAMS at CUHK is hosted and supported by the 'Support for innovative eLearning strategies' project at Centre for Learning Enhancement And Research.

Target users

LAMS is NOT positioned as a full-scale learning management platform for general-purpose teaching and learning at the University. However, we are happy to support individual teachers to use the system in their teaching with technical and pedagogical backup from our project. We consider that it has great potential in enhancing teaching and learning at the University.

Sample LAMS activities

Below is a story about how LAMS was used at CUHK.

Dr Mary Au Yeung, Pharmacy, 2005 - 2006

Mary built a sequence of activities to let her students read and then react on a number of eCases. The sequences were built mainly through using the 'noticeboard', 'shared resources' and 'Q&A' functions. Six cases were built around six different patients having different kinds of illnesses. Students, worked in groups, read more about each case (symptoms of the patients on 'noticeboard'), then read more about the illnesses (links to external sites in 'shared resources'), and then wrote to each other in the class their judgments on diagnosis and treatments (through answering the 'Q&A'). Mary followed up the online discussion by further elaborating students' answers in class.
