Workshop for Research Supervision (2023-24)

Workshop Details: A good cohesive supervisor-student relationship is essential in assisting postgraduate research students achieve their learning outcomes. By negotiating expectations about the roles and responsibilities of both supervisor and student early on, the research journey for both parties can be engaging and rewarding. This workshop will provide a practical overview of best research supervision practices, including explicit examples from different disciplines. We will discuss strategies to help supervisors support and manage their postgraduates successfully.

What are your roles as a supervisor?
Participants will explore the different roles (and responsibilities) a supervisor may play throughout the candidature.

Matching student’s needs and supervisor’s style of supervision process
Participants will role play either “supervisor” or “student” when completing the ‘Role Perception Rating Scale Questionnaire’. In pairs, complete the questionnaire independently, and then compare answers with each other. Where there are significant differences, “supervisor” and “student” discuss and negotiate with each other.

Supervising the student at different stages of their candidature
Participants will identify some of the common problems supervisors encounter and explore strategies to overcome them using a series of scenarios.
