Thinking critically isn’t just about finding flaws; it’s about recognizing connections and relationships, and thinking beyond a given situation to explore what else is possible.
Thinking and writing critically are therefore key transferable skills that you can use to build your career within academia and beyond. In this workshop, we’ll use techniques associated with critical thinking to evaluate the arguments of others – and strengthen our own. We’ll also explore ways to express a critical perspective in writing. The speaker will guide you through a few thinking and writing exercises that you will apply to your own research interests – so you may wish to have in mind a situation or study you’d like to interrogate (no sharing required).
By the end of the workshop, you should be better able to:
Use critical thinking techniques to evaluate the arguments of other scholars.
Review your own writing to strengthen its power and precision.
Express a critical perspective using an academic writing style.

Dr Heather Dyer, Royal Literary Fund Consultant Fellow, UK
Dr Heather Dyer is a Royal Literary Fund Consultant Fellow, author and academic writing coach who facilitates workshops and residential writing retreats for doctoral researchers. She has given verbal and written feedback to hundreds of researchers, helping them explain their work with clarity and confidence. Heather is also an award-winning children's author. Her doctorate explores the psychology of creativity and the working habits that maximize opportunities for creative insight.
