The rapid
advancement of the Web - the ever-ready access, the capacity for storage,
and the diverse and updated information - is capturing the imagination
and interest of educators and challenging us to reconceptualize the
way to teach our students who grew up with video games and MTV. The
completely lecture-based approach must be reconsidered given its proven
limitations for learning.
This workshop focused on designing course activities based on the practical knowledge
gained from research in (1) characteristics of active learning; (2)
problems-based learning; (3) a learning continuum as a student needs
more or less in both guidance and exploration during any learning tasks.
Concrete and practical examples developed and used in actual courses
taught by the workshop leader will be presented and explained. There
were dedicated time for Q&As, and one-to-one or one-to-small group
discussions with the workshop leader.
