Putting theory into practice through individualised assessment tasks
Facilitator: Professor David Kember, Centre for Learning Enhancement And Research

Detail: The ability to write a well-argued essay or report is surely one of the desired learning outcomes of any degree. This implies that assessment should include writing tasks. Setting common essay topics commonly results in copying, dumping material from the internet or even plagiarism. Setting essays in examinations results in tests of the ability to speed write remembered model answers, even if they don't exactly match the question set.

This workshop will examine ways in which assessment tasks can be individualised, minimising chances of undesirable practices. Examples will include:
  • Application of theory to individuals' experience.
  • Application of theory to a selected current issue.
  • Reflection on experience in practice situations, including critical incident reflection.
  • Allowing students an open choice of topic.
  • An open case-study.
  • Project-based writing tasks.

  • Date: 3 May 07, Thursday
    Time: 12:30pm - 1:30pm
Venue: Room 804, William M.W. Mong Engineering Building
