Appropriate assessments for case-based teaching & learning
Facilitator: Professor Paul Lam, Centre for Learning Enhancement And Research

Detail: Much attention has been paid to the introduction of case-based activities in courses, while comparatively less interest has been shown to the assessment of these case-based courses. An ideal assessment design for case-based courses should allow students to play a more prominent role in the design of assessments and encompass a wide range of student performances. With case-based assessment, emphasis needs to be put on monitoring students' process in completing the case-based activities, rather than on the products alone. In the workshop, we will look at examples of a number of such designs. Assessment strategies covered include group-work, self-evaluation, and peer-evaluation.
