Curriculum Innovation in a Top Research University: Should we teach "product" or "process"?
Facilitator: Dr LEE Hye Jung
Director of e-Learning Support, Seoul National University

Detail: The educational goal of most top universities is to cultivate intellectual knowledge in each discipline, and more importantly they also want students to acquire general core competencies, such as critical-thinking ability, creativity, problem-solving ability, and other social and emotional competencies, such as leadership, social communication skill, interpersonal skills, and so on. However, these goals are not achieved easily. One reason is that "what" (teaching contents) and "how" (instructional methods) are not appropriate to achieve "why" (goal of the university education). It’s because they teach "product" of knowledge, rather than "process" of getting knowledge, although this general core competency cannot be acquired from receiving knowledge product only. This product/process paradigm influences curriculum development as well. Product-based paradigm has brought discipline-based curriculum, which is mostly about receptive learning from delivery of knowledge product, while process-based paradigm brings issue (or problem)-based curriculum, which is more about "how to think" rather than "what to think". Issue-based curriculum focuses on field issues in reality which can only be solved not by a specific discipline, but by comprehensive convergence of many disciplines as well as other social skills at the same time. How to support and implement this competency-based (for goals and contents) and issue-based (for contents and methods) curriculum will be discussed in the seminar.
