ePortfolios for Learning
Facilitator: Professor Carmel McNaught
Professor of Learning Enhancement, Director of CLEAR

Detail: The term ‘ePortfolio’ is used in a variety of ways in higher education. This is because ePortfolio tools have a wide range of functions. Within CUHK we are also using the term widely – from formal transcripts of achievement to a strategy to assist students develop learning profiles, thus assisting students’ personal growth and reflection on learning.

In this session we will explore the possible ways ePortfolios might be used and propose a model for the development of ePortfolios at CUHK. Apart from official transcripts (of both academic and experiential learning), ePortfolios can be used by students as spaces where they can reflect on their learning and develop electronic CVs. Some programmes and courses already utilize ePortfolios tools for assessment purposes. Group ePortfolios for team work are possible.

Some questions that need wide discussion at CUHK are:
  • Are ePortfolios likely to enhance students’ development of the graduate attributes we have for our graduates?
  • What sort of experiential learning activities should be formally accredited at CUHK? Who should do the accrediting?
  • Is it reasonable to provide students with online spaces that have control of? Is this educationally and pragmatically sensible?
The session offers CUHK teachers an opportunity to look at an important new area of development at CUHK and input their own ideas to the process.
