Background

Carmel joined the Chinese University of Hong Kong in January 2002. She was formerly Head of Professional Development in Learning Technology Services at RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia. Carmel has had three decades of experience in teaching and research in higher education in Australasia, southern Africa and Britain. She has worked in the discipline areas of chemistry, science education, second language learning, eLearning, and higher education curriculum and policy matters.

Carmel has taught mainly in the Sciences and in Education. Her main expertise relates to curriculum design in the Sciences - both with conventional deliveries and using communication and information technologies (CIT). However, she has also taught courses closely allied to the Humanities (Philosophy of Education, and History & Philosophy of Science) and Social Sciences (Comparative Education and Development Studies) and is thus well-placed to work in education development and research across a variety of discipline areas.

She has worked in developing country contexts and with English second language learners. She has coordinated and taught Research Methods courses at post-graduate level. She has successfully supervised nine masters students and two doctoral students; and has examined sixteen doctoral theses and ten masters theses. She is the current external examiner for MSc (Computer-Mediated Communication and Pedagogies) at the University of Mauritius.

She had concurrent appointments as Adjunct Professor in the School of Computing and IT at UNITEC New Zealand (2001-2007), and at the Lilydale campus of Swinburne University of Technology (2005-2007).
