Project Objectives

To evaluate the effectiveness of two approaches (face-to-face and WebCT approach) of case-based learning on students’ self-learning ability, clinical reasoning ability, and student satisfaction.

Description of process and deliverables

A total of 12 cases were developed for case-based learning in year 3. Face-to-face approached was used in semester 1 and WebCT approach was used in semester 2. Students’ self-learning ability, clinical reasoning ability and satisfaction level were compared between semester 1 & 2.

Evaluation of outcomes

There was no difference between the face-to-face and WebCT approach on self-learning ability, clinical reasoning ability and satisfaction to the approach (all p values > 0.05). From the focus group interviews, regardless the approach, case-based learning enhanced students’ self-learning ability and critical thinking skills. However, extra workload and insufficient time to prepare information were identified as the major disadvantages.

Dissemination of results & deliverables

The 12 developed cases in this project were shared with all teachers through the intranet of the school. This project was presented in the departmental Teaching and Learning Seminars and the faculty Curriculum Retreat. A manuscript of this project is drafted to be submitted to an international nursing journal, and another presentation in an international conference will be made in the year of 2010.
