Project Objectives

This project examined the impact of experiential learning at CUHK from an alumni perspective, through exploring 1) experiential learning experiences of recent graduates (e.g. exchange, internship, mentorship, student clubs and leadership training); 2) the meanings they construct about these experiences; and 3) specific learning outcomes associated with these experiences.

Description of process and deliverables

The study adopted a qualitative approach, using grounded theory for analysis, to explore the experience of recent graduates. There were:

  • 6 pilot phone interviews (January – February 09)
  • 3 pilot individual interviews (February 09)
  • 35 phone interviews (March – April 09)
  • 2 focus-group interviews (April 09)
  • 4 individual interviews (May – July 09)
Findings
The analysis showed that experiential learning activities in CUHK have a positive impact on the learning development of the alumni participants. Specific evidence of value was identified in five particular aspects: a) personal growth, b) social networking, c) cross-cultural exposure, d) academic development, and e) career development. In addition, a number of factors facilitate the value students obtain from experiential learning activities, for example flexibility in the department, students’ personal interests, peer support, belonging to related communities/ organizations, and the overall University culture.
