Project Objectives

The objective of this project was to enable annual programme monitoring driven by standard data sets presented in time series. A subsidiary objective was the acquisition of an online survey system that facilitated large-scale surveys.

Description of process and deliverables

A revised plan to provide longitudinal data on the student learning experience at CUHK, earlier endorsed by the Senate Committee on Teaching and Learning (SCTL) via Circular No. 1, 2008–09 in November 2008, has been developed further. Other project deliverables include the acquisition and implementation of the online survey system and a process to monitor undergraduate programmes (Ug) programmes is now in place (partially fulfilling QAC R4.b).

A discussion paper on obtaining time-series data on CUHK programmes was presented on Friday 2 October 2009 to the SCTL. The paper outlined issues related to time-series data on the student learning experience (QAC R4.b) and alignment of monitoring and review process for Ug and TPg courses (QAC R4.c). Similarly, an information paper on taught postgraduate (TPg) programme evaluation has been developed and discussed with the Dean of the Graduate School (GS). The paper identified a conceptual framework to provide time series data (QAC R4.b) and support the alignment of monitoring and review process for Ug and TPg courses (QAC R4.c). At a meeting on Thursday 8 October 2009, the GS accepted responsibility for implementing the QAC recommendations.

Evaluation of outcomes

The online system was implemented in March 2009 without detriment to the SEQ schedule. This system enables high-volume survey data collection, with action now underway to automate the process for analysis and reporting the data. The wider objective to satisfy QAC R4.b and QAC R4.c has been fulfilled for the Ug programmes. Action in regard to the TPg programmes now resides with the GS, which has a conceptual framework and draft TPg questionnaire (TPQ) to support their actions.

Dissemination of results & deliverables

Capability developments and concerns over programme-level evaluation were presented to SCTL in a Discussion Paper on Friday 2 October 2009.

An information paper on taught postgraduate (TPg) programme evaluation was presented and discussed with the Dean of the Graduate School.

There is a detailed manual for the administration of surveys, including the steps of project planning and coordination, preparation of questionnaires, administration (paper and online) including reminders, data analysis and generation of profiles and reports.
