Introduced as part of the resources available under the Green Office Programme (GO!), ‘Green Matters’ is an e-newsletter aiming to provide the University community a platform for sharing sustainable practices/stories/tips as well as upcoming green events. 'GO!' is developed to promote a number of simple actions staff and students can take to make their workplaces more environmentally-friendly. For details about 'GO!', please refer to the ‘GO!’ website.
Come Design CUHK’s New Green Landmark - The ‘Column of Sustainability’ (Submission Deadline: August 8, 2013)

Purpose of the Competition
To celebrate our 50th Anniversary, the University plans to mount up a “Column of Sustainability” in the Yasumoto International Academic Park (YIA) to explicitly convey the vision and commitment of CUHK as a green university at this prominent location.
CUHK has set goals to reduce energy use (per capita) and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (per capita) on campus by 25% and 20% respectively by 2025, and also adopted a number of medium-term sustainability targets.
We are calling for entries to the competition from our students and staff and the submitted designs are expected to enable the University community to learn about these targets and the university’s progress towards them, and thereby further encourage cultural and behaviour changes on campus through this engagement and awareness process. With this new landmark, we will also demonstrate by example to the society at large.

Who can Join
The competition will have a Student Section and a Staff Section. Students (undergraduate and postgraduate students) and staff may submit designs as individuals or as teams.

Prizes and Acknowledgement
Winners will be announced in September 2013. Prizes are as follows:
Champion (one from each section) - $8,000 in book coupons
First runner-up (one from each section) - $2,000 in book coupons
Second runner-up (one from each section) - $1,000 in book coupons
One of the winning designs will be adopted for the construction of the ‘Column of Sustainability’.

Final edition of Green Matters and new electronic format of ‘Sustainable Campus’

This September, Green Matters will present its news and stories on a new platform, the e-newletter version of 'Sustainable Campus'. As such, this will be the final issue of Green Matters in its current format.

To all GO! members who have contributed news and shared their 'GO!' green office practices in past issues, we cannot thank you enough for your support and great ideas which made this newsletter a success. We hope you will continue to contribute your experiences and initiatives by emailing GO@cuhk.edu.hk. We look forward to sharing your stories and interesting green news in the upcoming ‘Sustainable Campus’ e-newsletters, with a wider group of readers.

The ‘Sustainable Campus’ newsletter, published by Information Services Office, will shift to an electronic format this September in order to save paper and reach an ever-growing number of subscribers. The e-newsletter will cover a wider variety of topics and have a number of new features, one of which is a column for ‘GO!’ offices and green practices shared by CUHK offices. We are happy to work with ISO and contribute to this new column as well as articles on other green initiatives in the new e-newsletters.

Sustainable News on Campus
Go Green and Bring Your Own Bottle! Check out the new Water Dispenser Map Promoting ' Bring Your Own' Campaign to Freshmen in O' Camp
There are many water dispensers on campus. We encourage students to use them to fill bottles instead of buying packaged drinks. It is good for the earth and saves money, too!
A list of easily accessible water dispensers/ water fountains on campus can now be viewed in this list as well as in map of the ‘CUHK Mobile’ App (available for iOS and Android)
For ‘CUHK Mobile’ App, the water map can be viewed under Campus Map > Facilities > Living Essentials > Water Dispensers.
(Special thanks to CUHK Green World for confirming the water dispenser locations listed above)
To promote the culture of ‘Bring Your Own Bottle’ on campus and encourage students to bring their own bottles, the Campus Planning and Sustainability Office has offered to the organizing committees (OCs) of O’ Camps subsidies for the production of water bottles printed with a ‘Bring Your Own’ message for distribution to new students. The response from OCs has been enthusiastic and it is expected that over 3000 freshmen and student counselors will receive the green message that comes with the reusable water bottles during O’Camp. We look forward to seeing more students bringing their own bottles and consuming less disposable bottled water/packaged drinks on campus in the coming academic years.
We would like to offer our thanks to all the participating OCs for supporting ‘BYOB’.

CUHK has signed the Energy Saving Charter on Indoor Temperature and the Energy Saving Charter on No Incandescent Light Bulbs organized by Electrical and Mechanical Services Department. As a signee, the University pledges
(1) to maintain an average indoor temperature between 24-26°C during the months of June to September 2013 in all non-residential buildings on campus (The University’s Energy Conservation Guidelines requires keeping the indoor temperature at 25.5 +/- 2°C during summer months); and
(2) to refrain from procuring incandescent light bulbs for general lighting purposes.
(According to CUHK’s green purchasing guidelines (issued in 2012), no new incandescent lamps are to be purchased and existing ones are to be gradually replaced by Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs), CFLs or other energy-efficient lamps.)
Green Tips for New Students- O’Camp Green Tips and Living a Green Life on Campus WWF launched updated version of Seafood Guide
Are you a freshman seeking information on our green campus or information on how to live a green life in CUHK, or an OC organizer interested in making your O’ Camps fun and green at the same time? Do check out the useful information in the new ‘Guidelines for Sustainable O’ Camps and Promoting the University’s Green Guidelines to Freshmen’! To protect marine ecology, CUHK’s ‘No Shark’s Fin’ Policy urges all members to avoid consumption of unsustainably produced seafood. We encourage all CUHK members to refer to WWF’s ‘Seafood Guide’, which lists species that are produced with less impact on ecology for diners’ information. WWF has recently launched an updated version of this popular guide with more seafood species commonly chosen by Hong Kong people added. More about the Seafood Guide 2013
