Phase 2 of the Green Office Programme (GO!) was successfully launched on 9 April 2012 and was followed by a ‘BYOC tea party’. Professor Joseph Sung, Vice-Chancellor, welcomed 40 academic and research units and 1 service unit that newly joined ‘GO!’. 63 offices that joined ‘GO!’ in Phase 1 and successfully fulfilled its requirements were acknowledged as ‘Competent Green Offices’ by the Vice-Chancellor at the Ceremony. All ‘Competent Green Offices’ may download a specially designed e-seal for use in its website, publications and correspondences. Please check the ‘Competent Green Offices’ page for more details.

Phase 2 of the CUHK Green Office Programme (GO!) will be launched on 9 April and we are now extending ‘GO!’ to academic and research units. To acknowledge the contributions of ‘GO!’ Phase 1 offices and welcome new ‘GO!’ members, a Green Office Programme (GO!) Phase 2 Launch Ceremony cum ‘Bring Your Own Cup’ (BYOC) tea party to be officiated by Vice Chancellor will be held on 9 April at Lee Shau Kee Building, 1/F, LT7 from 9:00am-10:30am. Please check out more details on our online registration page. If your office has not registered as a member of ‘GO!’ yet, please become a member and register to attend the Ceremony!
Based on the feedback and suggestions collected from Phase 1 members of ‘GO!’, we would also like to unveil a simpler and more user-friendly ‘GO! Checklist’ for ‘GO!’ participants to use in Phase 2 of the ‘GO!’ programme. Please check out the new checklist on our website, or view an updated information sheet on ‘GO!’.
A harvest festival was held at the roof garden of An Integrated Teaching Building on March 25 to celebrate the first harvest of a permaculture workshop course held collaboratively by the School of Architecture and the Permaculture Institute. Aiming to promote green life style and to demonstrate how human can live in harmony with nature through practicing permaculture, the bi-weekly workshops commenced in mid-January and provided guidance on organic farming to participating students and staff. Vice-Chancellor Professor Joseph Sung, guests, students and staff harvested organic vegetables and sampled freshly made salad at the festival.
In recognition of the significant impact that the built environment has on GHG emissions and global climate change, CUHK signed the ‘HK3030 Energy Saving Charter (Education Sector)’ organized by the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC) at a HK3030 Activation Ceremony held on 3 March 2013. As a signee, CUHK pledges to integrate environmental considerations into the planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of facilities and services as well as take various measures to raise awareness among staff and students and reduce energy use in buildings.

The University appointed 192 staff members from 8 faculties and some 80 departments/offices as Energy Wardens in February. The Energy Wardens will support the University’s 2013 Energy Conservation Plan over the next 3 years by working with Estate Management Office to identify energy-saving opportunities within their own buildings.

CUHK signed Greeners Action’s Charter on 'Eco-Friendly Lai See Packets' in December and pledged to reduce the number of lai see packets used, adopt more eco-friendly designs for any custom-printed lai see packets, and encourage reuse. A list of locations where used lai sees are collected in Hong Kong has been provided by Greeners Action recently. We encourage all students and colleagues to support reuse by bringing used lai see packets to one of the collection points.

Environmental Sustainability Ambassador (ESA) Opening Ceremony and Training Seminar for ESAs and Energy Wardens will be held on 21 November (Wed) and 24 November (Sat). ESAs and Energy Wardens can attend the one-day intensive training seminar on Wed or a half-day supplementary training seminar on Sat. The main theme of the Program this year is 'Let's Go, Energy Conservation' and it will cover energy saving, prevention of wastage and green building design.
The 2012 Climate Change Symposium will be held at CUHK on 27-28 November. (Organizers: The National Natural Science Foundation of China and The Chinese University of Hong Kong)
All CUHK students (undergraduate and postgraduate) are now cordially invited to participate in the first Green Competition of the Cross-strait Green University Consortium. Deadline for registration is 30 November.
To follow the University's 'No Shark's Fin' Policy, all official meal expenses shall be claimed together with a declaration (pre-printed on the entertainment expenditure claim form for checking by the claimer) that no shark's fins were served/ consumed in the meal concerned. The revised "Reimbursement / Payment for Entertainment Expenditure Form" is available for download from Bursary website.

Lee Woo Sing College will hold a 'GreenWS Day' on 12 October 2012 from 12.30 pm- 4.30pm at the Science Centre podium. The event marks the finale of the college's 5th anniversary celebration activities. There will be a recycling-themed exhibition, workshops on paper and soap making, an organic farm, green market and display of eco-artwork from the CU Tree Project. All are welcome. The MTR University station opened its new northern exit on 28 September 2012. Complementing the green campus and the new teaching buildings of CUHK, the new entrance has been awarded LEED Silver rating for its environmentally-friendly features including a creative pitched roof design for rainwater collection, finger-like skylights and vertical strip windows to maximize natural lighting. Students and staff can walk from the new Exit to Central Campus in around 13 minutes along a new walking route and using the escalators in Yasumoto International Academic Park and Wu Ho Man Yuen Building. A two-day I • CARE Community Market Fair will be held at Cultural Square on Central Campus. About 12 community businesses and social enterprises will showcase and demonstrate their latest products and services. There will be booths run by operators of different nature, including environmental and agricultural, cooperatives and fair trade, and social inclusion. Prof. Joseph Sung, Vice-Chancellor, will officiate at the opening ceremony to be held at 1.30 pm on 4 October. This will be followed by a seminar (2.30-4.30pm) on the responsible procurement of public organizations.

On 31 August (Friday), CUHK Jockey Club Initiative Gaia organized an opening workshop for "Go Green Community –Jockey Club Carbon Reduction Partnership Scheme" at LT2, Sino Building, Chung Chi College, from 10 am-12 noon. AAPC formalized the 'No Shark's Fin' practice as part of CUHK's green purchasing endeavours on 17 July 2012. According to the 'No Shark's Fin Policy', shark's fin consumption will be formally banned from all official functions that are either arranged or paid by CUHK. No shark's fin dishes shall be served in clubhouse, canteens and restaurants operated by the University and Colleges. The Green Purchasing Guidelines have also been updated accordingly.

The Tree Pests and Treatment Workshop III, co-organized by School of Life Sciences, CUHK & Sustainable Green Ltd., was held today at LT1 of Mong Man Wai Building. The workshop consisted of a seminar series and a practical session, and covered pest control and treatment practices in Hong Kong. On 30 June 2012, the CU Tree Project and the Grateful Green Group (3G) will launch trial versions of a 'CU Tree App' and a 'CU Bird App' for iPhone and iPad users. The Chinese University of Hong Kong records with deep sadness the passing of Professor Hu Shiu-ying, renowned botanist and Honorary Professor of Chinese Medicine, on 22 May 2012 at the age of 102. Professor Hu is recognized all over the world as a leading authority on hollies, daylilies, paulownias, daisies and orchids.
The Environmental Sustainability Ambassador (ESA) Programme will organize an 'ISO 14064 Greenhouse Gas Verifier Training Workshop' for its ambassadors. This training workshop will run from 18 June to 7 July. Participants will receive professional training on carbon auditing according to the ISO 14064 international standard.

Phase 1 of the Green Office Programme (GO!) was successfully launched on 11 May 2012. Professor Joseph Sung, Vice-Chancellor, commended at the launch ceremony 51 offices of university management, colleges, academic and service units, 5 student bodies, and 4 academic units (pre-registered before Phase 2 of the Programme) for their support for green office practices.

Four Year 1 students (Yip Chun-wa, Lam Ho-yi, Mok Tsz-tung and Sa Yat-sing) from the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering won the championship in the First Greater China Design Competition with a specially designed refuse sorting device that uses a sound detection system.

CUHK will join groups and individuals in Hong Kong and across the world to support the WWF global campaign 'Earth Hour 2012', to turn off their lights on 31 March 2012 for one hour as an alert to people to take action on climate change.
The 'Green Photography Exhibition', jointly organized by Shaw College Environmental Enhancement Committee and Eco-Education and Resources Centre, is held at Yueh Chiao Art Gallery, Lecture Theatre, Shaw College, from 26 March to 12 April 2012. Admission is free.
A 'Green Campus' section with some campus trees and birds has been added to the gallery of the 'CUHK Mobile' app for iPhone and Android users.
The 'Science and Art of Trees and Birds of CUHK Exhibition' is held on 1/F, Lee Shau Kee Building of CUHK till 20 June 2012.
On 2 March 2012, close to 1,000 staff and students participated in 'Walking Campaign and Car-free Day 2012'. Led by the Vice-Chancellor, they walked from the MTR University Station to S.H. Ho College; some also chose not to drive or take school bus that day, to show support to environmental sustainability and promote walking on campus.

In accordance with the Green Purchasing Policy, a 'Green Purchasing Guidelines' document, which contains a list of environmentally-responsible products for mandatory purchase by CUHK departments as well as hired consultants and contractors, is made available for the University community's reference. The guidelines also contain a list of recommended items for voluntary adoption.

On 4 October 2011, the University passed a Green Purchasing Policy, which requires all CUHK units as well as consultants and contractors to choose environmentally-responsible options when purchasing specific products. A 'Green Purchasing Guidelines' document will be provided to the University community in due course for further guidance and to facilitate the policy's implementation.
