History Research Project

Informal Meeting of History Research Project

On 26 January, 2006, the Centre has conducted a meeting to exchange viewpoints on the religious history research of Hong Kong and China. The meeting was convened by Fr. Louis Ha Keloon. Other participants include: Professors Tam Wai-Lun and Peter Ng Tze-Ming of the Department of Cultural and Religious Studies(CRS), Professor Frederick Cheung Hok-Ming of the Department of History, Fr. Patrick Taverine and Gianni Criveller of the Holy Spirit Study Centre, Fr. Jacob Kwok Wai-Ki of the Holy Spirit Seminary College of Theology and Philosophy(HSSC), several post-graduate students, including Ng Ka-Chai of the Department of Music, Ho Wai-Kit of the Department of History, George Tsang of CRS, and also Miss Mary Yuen, Administrative Coordinator of the Centre for Catholic Studies and Researchers of the HSSC.

In the meeting, Fr. Louis Ha introduced some thoughts on the framework of the project, mainly in three areas:

  1. fundamental work: collecting historical materials, and produce a catalogue relating to materials of Church history research in Hong Kong, mainland China and oversea);
  2. to encourage more students and scholars to involve in Catholic research and set up fund to sponsor research projects;
  3. to conduct research by the researchers of the Centre, mainly by Fr. Louis Ha, Fr. Patrick Taveirne and Fr. Gianni Criveller at this stage.

Apart from sharing personal research interet, the participants also shared their opinions towards the above ideas. Some of their suggestions are:

  • to translate some important first-hand materials and compile as a book, so that researchers can make use of these materials;
  • in collecting historical materials, apart from existing documents, the Centre can conduct interviews in Hong Kong and mainland China through oral history projects;
  • to organize a one-day workshop or seminar on history of missionary activities and publish a proceeding afterwards;
  • set up a shelf in the CU library on Catholic historical materials.
