The MacLehose Trail
Revised Edition
By Tim Nutt, Chris Bale and Tao Ho

The MacLehose Trail is a 100-kilometre walk-starting in Sai Kung and finishing off in Tuen Mun-across some of Hong Kong's most spectacular countryside. It is a Hong Kong treasure which many people have never seen nor experienced: windswept coastline and deserted beaches, abandoned villages, mountains that climb into swirling clouds, and tranquil forest paths and bamboo groves.
Three unlikely explorers set out to catch the spirit of the Trail in a book. For Tim Nutt, an architect, the project became a personal odyssey. He walked the Trail in all seasons and all weathers, and took more than 2,000 photographs. Chris Bale wrote the words. For many years he chaired the Trailwalker Charitable Trust, organizing an annual race for charity along the Trail. Tao Ho, whose buildings are familiar landmarks in the city, was delighted to discover that Hong Kong also has unspoiled countryside. His paintings contribute a highly individualistic impression of the Trail.
Ever since its publication in 1992, the book has won appeal from all who love the countryside-serious Trailwalkers, weekend hikers, armchair travellers. Now The Chinese University Press has published a revised and updated edition of this highly popular book, capturing scenes that have changed over the years, the now empty Kai Tak Airport, the magnificent Tsing Ma Bridges, and many more.

Faces in the Crowd: A Journey in Hope
By Chris Bale

A baby girl, a family of sugar workers, a disabled man, a student, a well-meaning banker, a village woman and a boy with leprosy. Nobody rich or famous. Just faces in the crowd. Yet each with a remarkable story to tell.
Chris Bale met them all during twenty years of working with charities in Asia. Time passed and he lost contact with them, but in 1997 he set out to find them again, hoping to see how their lives had changed.
This is the moving story of that search, a journey which started in a fishing village in the Philippines and ended seven months later on the dusty streets of Karachi.
Chris Bale has lived and worked in Hong Kong for twenty years and was Director of Oxfam Hong Kong from 1984 to 1991. He was also for many years Senior News Presenter for Asia Television's World Channel and produced a number of award winning documentary films. In 1986 he was selected as one of Hong Kong'sTen Outstanding Young People and in 1996 was awarded the MBE for services to charity. He is now based in London as Director General of Befrienders International, the umbrella organization for the Samaritan movement worldwide.

Hong Kong: A Moment in Time

By Tim Nutt and Chris Bale

A unique collection of over 400 photographs, the book shows Hong Kong people's perceptions, feelings and memories about the city at a special moment in time. It presents the visual richness of local life: festivals, street scenes, buildings, villages, food, lifestyle, textures, countryside, pollution, colours, crowds. capturing Hong Kong's frantic city life and the beauty of its unspoilt countryside, the sophistication of its modern urban environment and fading memories of a gentler past. To add another dimension to the book, Chris Bale talked to ten Hong Kong people: Fang Zhaoling (artist), Doris Lau (executive), Chung Wah Nan (architect), Sir David Aker-Jones (ex-civil servant), Jackie Chan (movie star), Leung Kwok Lin Choi (housewife), John Au (designer), Christine Loh (politician), Simon Hui (musician), and Christine Fang (social worker). Their stories also tell the story of Hong Kong.
Tim Nutt conceived the book, developed the idea with Chris Bale and directed the photography. He has lived in Hong Kong for twenty years and has worked as an architect. Chris Bale spoke to the ten people and wrote the interviews.
