| Description of strategy |
The clinical training for Hong Kong"s future Chinese medicine practitioners at present relies mainly on the facilities in Mainland China due to an absence of a Chinese Medicine (CM) hospital. The advent of the IT age has made possible effective eLearning materials to supplement the normal CM clinical training. Starting 2007, the School has been establishing and trialing a set of case-based eLearning resources through the support of TDG.
The resources have the following characteristics:
- Real clinical cases from Hong Kong and the Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine
- Digital photos, graphics and video clips for presentation such as patient’s complexion, gesture, skin lesions, tongue textures and colors
- 24-hour online access for Chinese medicine students
- Online quizzes covering subject areas like diagnoses, treatment strategies, herbal formulas and acupuncture points selection
- Instant feedback on students’ answers
- Possible follow up interactive discussions in class
|
| Materials developed |
| So far (early 2008), more than 50 clinical cases of various CM specialties have been developed for access by CM students after careful editing to suit the CM learning needs. Several tutorials have been organized at the School of Chinese Medicine to promote the eLearning materials to the students. Currently, more clinical cases are being collected and more promotion campaigns will be launched to disseminate this innovative learning tool to CM students both within and outside the University. |
| Students' role |
|
Screen captures |
| Self-study materials for students to practice application of knowledge and clinical reasoning at leisure time. |
|

|
| Teachers' role |
|
| The teacher needs to collect case stories from multiple CM
hospitals and clinics in the Mainland and in Hong Kong and convert these cases into interactive online exercises. The teacher also actively promotes the materials to students and teachers within the School. |

| Evaluation
method |
|
- Student surveys
- Expert reviews by Chinese Medicine teachers in four institutions
|
|
| Feedback
collected |
|
- Content experts in four institutions in Hong Kong acknowledge the learning potential
- About 100 students previewed the eCases. They appraised the design and acknowledged significant potential learning benefits
