Each course should be a quality learning experience for students. There are a number of factors which are involved in designing and implementing high quality courses. This website provides information, resources and a service which can assist in this process.
- Ensuring the quality of teaching and learning
- Facilitating the use of technology in course design
Ensuring the quality of teaching and learning
"The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) regards teaching and learning as a core function; the University places great importance on the culture embedded in the institution and its history, and also on explicit systems and procedures to assure and enhance the quality of the educational experience for students." (Integrated Framework)
The University's teaching and learning policy is titled the Integrated Framework for Curriculum Development and Review (Integrated Framework).
The principles guiding the Integrated Framework encourage staff to use an outcomes-based approach (OBA) to curriculum design. The booklet Best practice in outcomes-based teaching and learning at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (By David Kember) contextualizes OBA into the CUHK context.
Planning the curriculum involves a range of aspects which can be incorporated into a model showing how they relate together and influence each other. This model is shown in Figure 1.

The Integrated Framework contains guides and templates for programme and course planning and review. The aim of the Course Outline Service is to provide support, where this is needed, on how best to implement the spirit and requirements of the Integrated Framework at course level.
During 2006, the Education Design Team in CLEAR examined 444 course outlines from undergraduate courses across all year levels in the Faculties of Arts, Business Administration, Engineering, Medicine and Science.
Using this experience guidelines and templates were developed for the construction of course outlines which fit the requirements of the Integrated Framework.
The Generic version of the guidelines (pdf) and a Template for writing a course outline(pdf) / (MS Word) can be downloaded here.
Course Outline Service
- The generic guidelines and template may be sufficient for some programmes.
- However, customized guidelines are produced on request using examples of good practice from existing CUHK course outlines in the discipline.
- Consultation and supporting services for enhancing individual course outlines are also available.

Facilitating the use of technology in course design
"The planning will be forward-looking, catering to the needs of students and society in the years ahead. Emphasis will be placed on novel pedagogy, with focus on student-centred learning and learning outcomes..." CUHK Strategic Plan, p. 26
Careful planning about how best to use technology is part of optimizing the design of student learning environments. Some practical suggestions can be found in the other areas of the eLearning Resources Centre.
The University has ratified a set of eLearning Guidelines to assist teachers and departments in implementing appropriate uses of technology in their designs for student learning environments.
These guidelines, titled Guidelines for web-enhanced student learning environments, can be downloaded here.
There are two sections:
"To ensure that students have access to clear and timely course information by enhancing information distribution and communication channels"
The Course Outline Service can assist here.
"To encourage further integration of IT in education by enhancing effective course management and collaborative learning"
All aspects of the eLearning Service can assist here.
