Economic activities play a predominant role in the lives of mankind. These activities include production, consumption, transactions, trade, and even transport, housing and education.

These interrelated activities interact with each other such a complex manner that the layman would find them difficult to fully understand. Economics, however, can provide for us a systematic and scientific analytical framework to understand and analyze these activities. The objectives of the Economics curriculum at the Chinese University of Hong Kong are to offer student such an analytical framework, to stimulate them to think about economic issues, and to enhance their abilities to analyze them independently.

eatures of Curriculum

To meet these objective, the curriculum is designed to be balance; so that students ca receive a solid foundation in such analytical tools as economic theory, mathematics and statistics. Students are also required to apply economic theories to analyze a broad range of economic issues. The Department's teaching aim stresses both theory and application.

Besides the undergraduate programme, the Department also runs M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes. The Department offers a wide range of courses for undergraduate students to choose, from art-like subjects such as economic history to science-like subjects such as econometrics. The motivated students may also choose courses in the graduate division. Besides, special subjects are offered to introduce students to the special issues of Hong Kong.

The Department stresses research activities. The faculty members in the Department have very broad research interest, with particular emphasis in theory and economic issues arising in Hong Kong, Taiwan, China and the Asia Pacific. They are collaborating with major institutions in China and overseas in various research projects. The Department publishes a discussion paper series to disseminate the findings of faculty member and to facilitate exchange with other institutions.

The Department provides training in analytical thinking to prepare student sufficiently for many different careers. Over years, most graduates entered the banking, finance and business sectors. The rest entered the Government or education sectors. A sizable number of graduates went overseas to further their studies. The graduates' performances on the job or in the academic circle have always been impressive.
