Course Description

This course aims at introducing students (Not for Economics Majors or Minors or students who have taken ECO 3410, 3420, 3520 or GEE 256Q.) to the institutional and practical aspects of the banking and financial sectors of the economy, especially the Hong Kong context. The first part of the course deals with banking, and the topics to be discussed include: money supply, interest rate determination, portfolio choice, management and operation of the banking system. The second part of the course deals with finance, and the topics to -be discussed include: the present value and the return of investment, principle of diversification, stock market movements, initial public offering, and derivatives. Finally, we will have an overview of Hong Kong financial system and its reform, including the linked exchange rate system, banking policy and supervision.

Assessment


Mid-Term Examination: 50%
Final Examination: 50%

Examination will comprise multiple-choice questions and short questions.
