Carbon Reduction

ˇ° Introduction

We signed the Charter of Carbon Reduction as an advocate of the campaign launched by HKSAR on August 2008. We committed to carry out carbon auditing and reduction through our daily activities on campus.

We have compiled the first Greenhouse Gas Emission and Recovery audit report for EMO and most of the major utilities on campus. The carbon emission data, together with the compensation through trees planting works on and off campus are included.

We have initiated a CUHK Community Afforestation Scheme on trees planting activities off campus. Through tree planting our stakeholders are contributed to the carbon recovery and compensated their carbon footprints on environment. Two new experimental sites for Green Roof are also constructed in 2008/09 at Romney Store for the purpose of carbon reduction as well as energy conservation (reduce the heat island effect and air-conditioning power).

In order to reduce fuels combustion pollutions on campus we have set target of reducing fuel consumption by 10 % through the pool car system and self-constraint of using vehicles in an effective way. Electric scooters are used on campus for gradual replacement of the diesel combustion engines.

A ˇ§Zero Carbonˇ¨ Refuse Collection point was constructed and completed in November 2008. This is the first ˇ§Zero Carbonˇ¨ construction on campus. It was partly built by Eco Glass Bocks, (recycling products composed by waste concretes and recycle glasses), powered up by solar energy, and made use of lake water for irrigation and cleaning.

ˇ° CUHK Community Afforestation Scheme

The scheme is a carbon foot print compensation activity motivating our stakeholders on caring our environment and actively reducing the global warming effects physically. An assigned land off campus on Grassy hill is reserved for CUHK trees planting works. In 2008 trees planting activities was held on March where over 600 students and colleagues joined and carried out the planting works on the assigned land.

Over three thousand small tress were planted and contributed to reduction in carbon footprint. Similar activities will be taken minimum twice annually in Spring season for the best results on trees planting.

ˇ° Greenhouse gas emission and recovery audit on campus

HKSAR is one of the members of the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation who honor its pledge in the APEC Leaderˇ¦s Declaration on Climate change, Energy Security and Clean Development and seek a reduction in energy intensity at least 25% by 2030.

HKSAR is prepared to set up an inventory for accounting and reporting the GHG emissions and removals from human activities to collect the GHG emissions data in Hong Kong. A set of proposed Guidance and Tables for inventory has drafted for commercial, (including offices, retails, restaurants, hostels and hotels) and / or residential purposes. The guidelines can also be applied for buildings used for institutional purposes such as school/universities, community centers, sport complexes etc.

CUHK as one of the tertiary institutes in HKSAR has the obligation for submission of data to support this Global activity. EMO has complied the sample Greenhouse Gas Emission and Recovery audit report internally as a trial run of this auditing work on campus.
