กฐ Introduction
Our Housekeeping Section is a pioneer on this carbon reduction issue. From July 2008 an incentive scheme contract has been offered to the selected waste collection contractor to motivate their efforts on waste recycle and reduction. Refuse collection points are increased on campus to assist the fluent transfer of the municipal wastes and numerous recycle facilities such as desk side recycle bins, recycle cages and collection points were set up in all strategic areas for enhancing our capabilities on recycling process from source.
Promotions and propagandas regarding waste reduction had also been posted up at the dominant areas on campus to remind our stakeholders for helping waste reduction and recycling. We have also joined the Wastewise Label Scheme through the Business Environmental Corporation to show our commitment on Waste Reduction on campus.
กฐ Waste reduction and recycling in 2007
The total municipal solid waste generated was 1,617 tons, approximately 94kg per Full Time Equivalent in 2007 which reduced by 12% in compare with 2006. They were collected and dumped in landfill. As pursued in 2006, EMO has put lot of efforts in waste separation and recycling process. We have increased our credibility in collection of separate waste. Over 50 sets of recycle bins for collecting waste paper, aluminum cans and plastic bottles have been set up in various main activity areas to enhance these services. Our 65 recycling points on campus have enhanced the recycling process on campus.
In 2007 we have collected 326,131 kg paper, 709 kg aluminum, 1,140kg plastic 568 nos. printed cartridge for recycling and the percentage of recycled rate was jumped up high by 20%. We also set up recycle cages for clothing, CD, toys, in some particulars locations on campus to collect them for charity purposes. The total municipal waste did reduce owing to these arrangements.
Obsolete equipments such as computer and monitors were gathered and handled by ITSC and Business Office for the arrangement of group bidding or dissembled to other needed societies.
The construction wastes were handled by contractors of works on campus. They were governed by HKSAR EPD Regulation to be dumped at the specified sites for landfills. There are no specific figures obtained in this issue regarding the construction wastes handled by contractors. However we are planning to record down this figure for further studies. It may further help to improve our environmental target if it can be reduced.
The new research in recycling process has created many sustainability improvement methods in this Environmental era. Many construction wastes can now be recycled, such as vehicle tires, iron bars, fluorescent tubes, bulbs etc. If we can properly separate and handled the materials they may become useful raw materials in the future.
As part of our important mission, EMO will continue to increase capacity in waste separation and promote the environmental process so as to reduce the municipal waste and construction waste through proper motivation and education channel to students, staffs and our users.
