M.Phil. Programme in English (Applied English Linguistics) (Full-time and Part-time)

Study Scheme

Applicable to students admitted in 2003-2004 and thereafter

A. Coursework Requirement

Students are required to complete a minimum of 30 units of courses for graduation.

(i) Required Courses

ENG5010, ENG5410, ENG5420, ENG5430, ENG5540, ENG6000#, ENG610T*

# To be taken near the completion of course work for the preparation of thesis proposal.
*A multi-taking course to be taken each term until completion of thesis.

24 units
(iii) Elective Courses
At least one course from the following and, subject to the approval of the Graduate Panel, the other elective may be a 3000-level course in the undergraudate curriculum.

B. Other Requirements

  1. IT Proficiency Test. (Please refer to "Student IT Competence")
  2. Students are required to submit a research thesis and pass an oral examination for graduation. The thesis should contain an original contribution to Applied Linguistics.
  3. Students showing deficiencies in undergraduate-level linguistics may be required to attend related undergraduate courses concurrently. Students whose research requires statistical analysis may be required to take undergraduate courses offered by the Department of Statistics as well as workshops offered by the Centre for Learning Enhancement and Research.
  4. Complete an Improving Postgraduate Learning (IPL) module on "Observing Intellectual Property and Copyright Law during Research". This will be an online module and relevant information can be accessed from the website: www.cuhk.edu.hk/clear/programmes/programmes.htm.

C. Remarks

  1. Full-time and part-time students must complete at least 15 units at the end of the second and third term respectively.

  2. Full-time students are required to submit a formal thesis proposal in early May of the second term; part-time students are requested to do so at the beginning of the third term. They are allowed no more than two attempts in applying for the formal approval of their proposal by the Graduate Panel. Any second attempt must come within one month of the first one.
