M.Phil. Programme in English (Applied English Linguistics) (Full-time and Part-time)

Study Scheme

1. Coursework Requirement

Students are required to complete a minimum of 27 units of courses for graduation.

(a) Required Courses

ENGE5010, 5410, 5420, 5430, 5540, 8000
(ENGE8000 is a thesis monitoring course to be taken each term until completion of thesis.)

21 units
(b) Elective Courses
At least two courses from the following
ENGE5440, 5450, 5510, 5520, 5530, 5550, 5560, 5570, 5580, 5590, 5600, 5610
6 units

Total:
27 units

2. Other Requirements

(a) Students are required to submit a research thesis and pass an oral examination for graduation. The thesis should contain an original contribution to Applied Linguistics.

(b) IT Proficiency Test. (Please refer to ¡§Student IT Competence¡¨.)

(c) Students showing deficiencies in undergraduate-level linguistics may be required to attend related undergraduate courses concurrently. Students whose research requires statistical analysis may be required to take undergraduate courses offered by the Department of Statistics as well as workshops offered by the Centre for Learning Enhancement and Research.

(d) A student who obtains a cumulative grade point average (GPA) below 2.0 in the preceding term or receives a failure grade in thesis monitoring courses (for Research Postgraduate Programmes) will be put on academic probation. For details, please refer to Clause 14.0 ¡§Unsatisfactory Performance and Discontinuation of Studies¡¨ of the General Regulations Governing Postgraduate Studies which can be accessed from the Graduate School Homepage: http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/gss.

(e) Complete an Improving Postgraduate Learning (IPL) module on ¡§Observing Intellectual Property and Copyright Law during Research¡¨. This will be an online module and relevant information can be accessed from the website: www.cuhk.edu.hk/clear/programmes/programmes.htm.

 

3. Remarks

(a) Full-time and part-time students must complete at least 15 units at the end of the second and third term respectively.

(b) Full-time students are required to submit a formal thesis proposal in early May of the second term; part-time students are requested to do so at the beginning of the third term. They are allowed no more than two attempts in applying for the formal approval of their proposal by the Graduate Panel. Any second attempt must come within one month of the first one.
