Programme Description

  • Gender Studies is an interdisciplinary programme with a unifying focus on gender as a theoretical perspective or as a subject of analysis. It allows students to bring together different disciplinary and methodological approaches for the advancement of gender studies. The programme emphasizes both theoretical knowledge and research skills;

  • The objective of the PhD Programme in Gender Studies is to encourage further investigation of teaching and research in gender studies in East and Southeast Asian societies at an advanced level;

Who should apply?

Applicants may come from a variety of backgrounds, including but not limited to anthropology, cultural studies, history, journalism, literature, nursing, political sciences, psychology, religion, sociology, and other allied fields. While a Master’s degree in gender studies is not required, applicants should have some knowledge of gender studies and good background in their intended research perspective.

Financial Assistance

Postgraduate Studentships (PGS) are available for full-time Ph.D. students. Students need not make a separate application for obtaining the PGS. The stipends are in return for students’ assistance in the teaching and research work, which is approximately 12 hours a week. The provisional monthly stipend is HK$13,600 (pre-candidacy) and HK$14,070 (post-candidacy) in 2012-13. While in receipt of the PGS award, a student must not undertake other engagement or employment, full-time or part-time, unless with permission of the University.

Language

For Gender Studies’s courses, lectures are usually in English. While for discussion and students’ presentation, students can use the language they feel most comfortable with, as long as the lecturers concerned understand that language. Meanwhile, most courses use English reading materials.

Admission Requirements

All students should fulfil the requirements prescribed below before they are admitted:

i. Academic Qualification

  • Master's degree from a recognized university; or

  • Bachelor's degree, normally with Second Class Honours in the upper division or above, and have been registered in a course of study for a Master's degree at this University for at least one year and have demonstrated research ability; or

  • Been registered in a course of study for a doctoral degree at a recognized university for at least one year, and have been approved for admission by the Graduate Council.

ii. English Language Proficiency Requirement

  • Have a degree from a university in Hong Kong or an English speaking country; or

  • Possess a pass grade in English in one of the following examinations: Hong Kong Advanced Level Exam. (AS Level); Hong Kong Higher Level Exam; CUHK Matriculation Exam; or

  • Have obtained a recognized professional qualification awarded in Hong Kong or an English speaking country; or

  • Reach one of the following scores:

Application Method

i. Procedures

  1. Applicants can either submit an online application or a paper application. Online application can be submitted at https://www.gradsch.cuhk.edu.hk/onlineapp/programme_list.aspx?FAC=INF . Hard copy application forms can be obtained from the Graduate School (map)

  2. Applicants can pay the application fee of HK$180 by using international credit cards, ATM or EPS, or sending in bank drafts or cheques.
    • For applicants who will pay the application fee by ATM: The account number is 293-005005-011. The original slips are needed;
    • For applicants who will pay the application fee by EPS at the counter of the Graduate School: The original slips are needed;
    • For applicants who will pay the application fee by bank drafts/cheques: Bank drafts/cheques should be made payable to “The Chinese University of Hong Kong”. Payment vouchers are also needed. Payment vouchers can be downloaded here: English, 繁體中文; 简体中文

  3. Applicants should indicate their intended subject discipline on their application forms and the application materials

  4. Applicants should submit the following documents to the General Office of the Gender Studies Programme before the application deadline. The address is Room 250, Sino Building, Chung Chi College, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shatin, Hong Kong (map).

    • Official transcripts from the University attended by the applicants
    • A research proposal
      • The quality of the research proposal is crucial to the success of an application.
      • The purpose of the proposal is to briefly describe to the Admission Panel the research project the applicants wish to pursue. A brief description of the intended research topic, objectives, and methods should be presented;
      • The proposal should include the following items:
        • What is the topic of the proposed study? What questions will be addressed?
        • Why is this topic important and why does it interest the applicants? A full survey of the literature is not expected to be offered, but if possible, do indicate how the research will differ from research that has already been done.
        • What methodology do the applicants propose to use in the research?
      • The proposal can be written in English or Chinese. Providing an English abstract will be appreciated if the proposal is in Chinese;
      • The length of the proposal should be between 5 to 8 pages.

    • Copies of certificates of academic/professional qualifications (e.g., degree certificate)

    • Copies of identity card or passport;

    • Documentary showing the applicant has fulfilled the Graduate School's English Language Proficiency Requirement;

    • Confidential recommendations from two referees respectively
      • Applicants can invite their teachers, bosses or any people who know them well to serve as their referees;
      • The recommendation form can be downloaded here: English, 繁體中文; 简体中文
      • Referees can directly send the recommendation forms to the General Office of the Gender Studies Programme. Alternatively, as long as the recommendations are put in sealed envelopes, applicants can send in the recommendation forms together with other application documents.
    • Other supporting documents required by the intended subject departments, if any
    • CV (optional)
    • Other relevant certificates of proofs that may strengthen their applications (e.g. a copy of the published articles, sample writing) (optional)
