Air conditioners emit air pollutants and greenhouse gases, damaging the environment and health. Environmental concern group Footprint organizes the No Air-con Day on 1st June each year. We can adopt the following methods in our daily lives to reduce the use of air-conditioners to save energy and alleviate global warming.
- Set indoor temperature at 25.5 XC during summer for maximum thermal comfort.
- Dress down. Remove neck ties and jackets.
- Program the air-conditioner timer. Switch it off one hour before you get up.
- Switch off air-conditioner when you leave the room.
- Clean the dust screen regularly to improve energy efficiency of the air-conditioner.
- Avoid direct sunlight on the air-conditioner.
- Shade the light with curtains.
- Use energy saving light bulbs which release less heat than traditional ones.
- Purchase air-conditioners with Grade 1 Energy Label.
- Use electrical fans.
