Environment Management Structure

The Chinese University is always at the forefront in the promotion of sustainable development. It recognizes the participation of the whole University in building a green campus. The environment work at CUHK is mainly carried out in the following three levels:

1. Policy Making

Organic farming in front of student hostels.

Major environmental policies are made by the Council and various committees of the University. For example, the University Steering Committee on Environment was established to promote environmental awareness among students and staff. Its members include staff from administrative units, academic departments, colleges, and student representatives. It performs duties such as investigating complaints on environmental issues, and publishing the annual environmental report. CUHK also set up the Energy Saving Task Force to conserve energy during daily operation of the University.

2. Implementation

Bird watching activity organized by a college.

The University Safety and Environment Office coordinates relevant offices such as the Estates Management Office, the Campus Development Office and the Transport Unit in implementing environmental projects. They oversee daily operation of transportation, canteens, and laboratories on campus to ensure the Universitys hygiene, safety and environmental standards are maintained above legally required levels.

In addition, a coordinator has been assigned in each unit to promote environmental protection measures within workplaces e.g. waste reduction, energy conservation.

3. Promotion

A student green group.

Different student organizations e.g. Green World, Green Post, Environmental Science Society and Geography and Resource Management Society organize activities and publish newsletters to promote environmental awareness among students.

Colleges also play an important role. Each college has its own Environmental Committee. Colleges organize activities like inter-hostel competitions, workshops, recycling campaigns, field trips, organic farming, and exhibitions.
