The Green Fleet
CUHK's green scooter fleet, unique among Hong Kong's tertiary institutions, is completely exhaust-free.
When staff of the Estates Management Office are needed at different parts of our
134-hectare
campus for maintenance work, they are usually whisked to their destinations by scooters. To reduce exhaust produced by campus vehicles, the University first introduced three electric scooters in April 2002, and then two more after that.
Electric scooters help prevent air or noise pollution. They do not run on diesel hence do not emit exhaust gas and black smoke; they are also very quiet. The battery of green scooters has to be recharged for five to six hours daily for two to three hours' use. Their maximum speed is 60 kmph, and lower when negotiating the campus's grueling slopes. Electric scooters consume over $1,000 worth of electricity per year, much cheaper than the $5,000 fueling cost of traditional scooters. Electric scooters are also more expensive. However having clean air on campus is well worth the price.
