The following measures are recommended for hostels:
- All should follow the Health Advice for Prevention of Human Swine Flu and the Good Hygiene Pracitces.
- Arrange an ample supply of thermometers, surgical gloves, masks and accessories. All who may have developed mild symptoms or appear to be sick should take a temperature check. Methods to take oral temperature are shown on the Powerpoint File on Taking Body Temperature.
- Anyone with a fever of >38C AND respiratory symptoms should wear a face mask and seek medical attention at University Health Service, Designated Flu Clinics or the Accident & Emergency Dept of public hospitals.
- If anyone develops upper respiratory symptoms within 7 days after returning from abroad, he/she should wear a face mask and seek medical attention at University Health Service, Designated Flu Clinics or the Accident & Emergency Dept of public hospitals.
- If any resident is confirmed with human swine flu (influenza A H1N1), please inform UHS at 2609-6006 or email to pauline-kan@cuhk.edu.hk.
- If a patient is admitted to the hospital, UHS should be informed as soon as possible (Mrs Pauline Kan at 26096436). Mrs Kan will keep track of the condition of the patient with the hospital, and any updated information will be relayed to the respective College and hostel at least once daily.
- Cleansing and disinfection will be carried out at the hostel room of the hospitalized student according to guidelines of the Committee. Separate accommodation will be arranged for the roommate.
Hostel support to resident students who are confirmed with human swine flu (influenza A H1N1) but are unable to go home:
- Arrange a separate room for the patient.
- Advise the patient to wear a mask, step up personal hygiene and minimize contact with other people.
- Maintain a clean and hygienic environment. Arrange cleansing and disinfection in areas where the patient stay to prevent disease spread. Use a 1 in 49 diluted household bleach (i.e. mixing 1 part of 5.25% household bleach with 49 parts of water) daily. For metallic surfaces, use a 70% alcohol solution for cleaning. Pay attention to proper functioning and cleanliness of toilets and drains.
- Maintain good indoor ventilation.
- Provide adequate masks and alcohol-based hand rubs to the patient.
- If the patient is admitted to the hospital, UHS should be informed as soon as possible (Mrs. Pauline Kan at 26096436). Mrs. Kan will keep track of the condition of the patient with the hospital, and any updated information will be relayed to the respective College and hostel at least once daily.
Hostel support to ‘close contact’ resident student:
- Advise the ‘close contact’ student to wear mask for 7 days, check and record own body temperature twice a day. Step up personal hygiene and observe any signs and symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections.
- Maintain good indoor ventilation.
- Provide adequate masks and alcohol-based hand rubs to the student.
- Provide thermometers and charts to record the body temperature twice daily.
- If the student is admitted to the hospital, UHS should be informed as soon as possible (Mrs. Pauline Kan at 26096436). Mrs. Kan will keep track of the condition of the patient with the hospital, and any updated information will be relayed to the respective College and hostel at least once daily.
