Administrative Officer, Assistant Commissioner for
Tourism
Immediately after graduating from
the History Department in 1994, Mr. Chan joined the
Administrative Service of the Government. He worked
in the then Heath and Welfare Branch, Tai Po
District Office, Security Bureau and the Chief
Secretary for Administration’s Office before. He has
taken up the current post since February 2003,
participating in the Hong Kong Disneyland project.
Mr. Chan also underwent in 1997 a training programme
in Michigan University on public administration and
international relations. Mr. Chan learned from his
experiences gained over these years that generalists
are playing an increasingly important role when the
society relishes refined division of labour and
specialization of knowledge. Generalists benefit
from their broader scope of perspectives, conducive
to more effective communication and cooperation
amongst different sectors in society. Mr. Chan
considers reading history the best training for a
generalist.
