LEE Ou-fan
B.A.(National Taiwan University), M.Phil. and PhD. (Harvard University)
Professor of
Humanities, Department of History, CUHK

I was appointed Professor of Humanities at CUHK two years ago, upon my early retirement from Harvard in 2004. I take this as an encouragement to cut across disciplinary and departmental boundaries--or at least to move among departments. After two happy years teaching at the Dept of Cultural and Religious Studies, I am moving to the Chinese department in the fall and the History department in the spring.

I was trained in modern Chinese intellectual history but taught modern Chinese literature in the States for the past thirty years. Now I like to try my free hand in a few new ventures, which will include two courses this spring: one jointly with Prof. Billy So on theories of cultural and legal history; the other on major intellectual texts in the late Qing and early Republican periods. I enjoy writing in both English and Chinese and have published accordingly in both languages. For the Chinese titles, please visit your nearest bookstore. For books in English, the major ones are the following:

The Romantic Generation of Modern Chinese Writers (Harvard, 1973)
Voices from the Iron House: A Study of Lu Xun (Indiana, 1987)
Shanghai Modern: The Flowering of Urban Culture in China (Harvard,1999)

I am also writing a general book titled "Hong Kong from the Ground Up", to be published by Harvard Univ. Press as one of their new series on cities. My new books in Chinese include one on Eileen Chang and a volume of essays called "Rhapsodies at Festival Walk" (both by Oxford Univ. Press.)
