It is our pleasure to announce that the project of “A GIS and Institutional Economic Study of the Cotton Textile Economy in the Songjiangfu (松江府) Region During the Eighteenth Century” headed by Professor Billy SO Kee Long has been supported by the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation a research fund of USD85,000 for two years. Prof. So, the principal investigator of the project, will work with the Institute of History and Philology, Academia Sinica in Taiwan and the Department of Geography and Resource Management of the CUHK.

A  piece of good news for the new year.  Its now official that the History Department's "West River Project" headed by Professor David Faure has been awarded a sum of $3.4 million for three years. The team will work together with Zhongshan Daxue (Sun Yatsen University) in Guangzhou and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology with Professor Faure as Principal Investigator.

Congratulations to Professor Ming-chiu Lai to have secured an RGC Earmarked Grant in his research on the Social Control in the Han Dynasty (206 BC – AD 220). This is his second RGC Earmarked Grant within six years.

  • Prof. YU Ying-shih Named Senior Distinguished Scholar at John W.Kluge Center
The Library of Congress of the United States has named Prof. Yu Ying-shih, who is widely respected throughout the Chinese-speaking world for his work on the history of Chinese philosophy, as a senior distinguished scholar in the John W. Kluge Center at the Library of Congress. Prof. Yu will pursue his interest in Chinese history, culture and philosophy.

Born in Anhui Province, China, Prof. Yu graduated from New Asia College of The Chinese University of Hong Kong and received his doctorate in history from Harvard University in 1962. He has had a distinguished career as a researcher, historian and teacher at Harvard, Yale, the University of Michigan and The Chinese University of Hong Kong. At the time of his retirement in 2001, he was Gordon Wu Professor of Chinese Studies and professor of history and East Asian studies at Princeton Univeristy.

 
  • 利希慎基金會捐贈港幣75萬元支持一名歷史博士生

中大歷史系獲利希慎基金會捐贈港幣75萬元,支持一名在2007至2008年度入學的歷史博士生完成博士課程。獲頒獎學金的博士生,於常規修業年期內將每月獲取助學金。

此項獎學金不設申請程序,歷史學部遴選委員會成員會審查每名報讀歷史博士課程的人士,從而作出最後決定。消息將於稍後時間公佈。

 
  • 利希慎基金會捐贈港幣126萬元支持「內地優秀博士生訪問學人計劃」
歷史系及比較及公眾歷史研究中心獲利希慎基金會捐贈港幣126萬元(每年港幣42萬元),支持「內地優秀博士生訪問學人計劃」。計劃於2006至2007年度開始。
 
  • 東華三院捐贈港幣300萬元支持「東華三院檔案匯編計劃」
比較及公眾歷史研究中心獲東華三院捐贈港幣300萬元,支持為期兩年的「東華三院檔案匯編計劃」。計劃完結時,將出版共三冊資料冊。
