Hi!

Welcome to Hong Kong for an education and experience of Asian culture!

I am the chairman of the History Department at the Chinese University and my Department provides a number of exciting courses taught in English for you to choose.

If you are interested in a new approach in studying of Chinese History through excursion and experience, I would suggest Professor Sui-wai Cheung's Chinese History in the Field (first term). This is an introductory course into Chinese History which will incorporate a few on-site visits in addition to classroom learning.

For those who are interested in China's relationship with Taiwan, I recommend to you Professor Frank Ching's Cross-Strait Relations in International and Historical Perspectives (first term), and Sino-US Relations (second term).

For China's recent development, the Department offers other interesting courses in Chinese history include Professor Priscilla Chung's Ethnicity and Women in Conquest Dynasties (first term), and The Women's Movement in China: Causes and Effects (second term), Professor Willy Lam's The Hu Jintao-Wen Jiabao Administration (2002-2007) (first term), and China-Japan Relations (second term), Dr. Kiyoko Yamaguchi's Chinese Diaspora: History of Chinatown in the World (second term); and Mr. Wing-kin Puk's China and the West (1500-1900) (second term).

My department also offers a selection of history courses outside the China context. Professor Frederick Cheung teaches Tradition and Transformation in Western History (first term), and Ancient and Medieval Western History (second term); and Professor Patrick Taveirne's 20th Century Europe (second term). Ms Yoko Miyakawa offers a course on Modern Japan since Meiji in the first term and Nationalism in Japan in the second term. Dr. Kiyoko Yamaguchi's History of Modern Southeast Asia and History of Traditional Japan (first term), History of Art and Fashion in Japan (second term). Dr. Ian Morley lectures on the History and the Historian (Introductory) and Patterns in Urban History and Development (first term), The Industrial Revolution and its Impacts and The Victorian City: Comprehending Social Developments in British/Colonial Society in the 19th Century (second term). Dr. Thomas Brophy's History of Modern Britain and Modern European History in the first term and History and the Historian (Advanced), Explorations in Modern American History and Britain and the British Empire in the second term. Mr. Michael Lee's teaches History of Singapore (first term).

All our courses carry three credits. A three-credit course requires tutorial attendance but I think you will find discussion around designated themes related to lectures rewarding.

Do let me or my office know if you have questions.

I wish you a fruitful time in Hong Kong.
