M.Phil. in History Programme
Formal teaching will be arranged over 24 months for full-time students and 36 months for part-time students. Students are required to submit their primary research-based dissertation by end-June in the second year of study. Students are also required to pass an oral examination for graduation.

Study Schemes: M.Phil. Programme in History

Applicable to students admitted in 2010-11 and thereafter
 
(1) Coursework Requirement
 
Students with a research master¡¦s degree are required to complete a minimum of 24 units (for full-time students) / 30 units (for part-time students) of coursework for graduation.
  (a) Required courses:
    (i) HIST6010
3 units
  (b) Elective courses:
    (i)
HIST5000- and HIST6000-level courses, which have not been taken for credit before.
9 units
    (ii)
Subject to supervisor¡¦s recommendation and Division Head¡¦s approval, students may choose up to 3 units of HIST6101 ¡§Independent Studies¡¨ offered by supervisor, co-supervisor, or other teachers to fulfill the requirement in (i).
 
    (iii)
Subject to supervisor¡¦s recommendation and Division Head¡¦s approval, students are allowed to choose up to 3 units of HIST4000-level course in the undergraduate curriculum, and these will count towards minimum course units for graduation if they achieve a course grade of B- or above.
 
  (c) Thesis monitoring course is listed below:
   
Thesis preparation: A student is required to take HIST8001 ¡§Thesis Guidance¡¨ in each term until his/her thesis is finally submitted. The course carries a total of 3 ungraded pass-or-fail units in each term. The student¡¦s performance will be shown on record but will not be counted towards the calculation of GPA.

(2) Other Requirements
  (a) Students are required to submit a research thesis and pass an oral examination for graduation.
  (b)
IT proficiency Test. (Please refer to ¡§Student IT Competence¡¨.)
  (c)
A student who obtains a cumulative grade point average (GPA) below 2.0 in the preceding term or receives a failure grade in thesis monitoring course (for Research Postgraduate Programmes) will be put on academic probation. For details, please refer to Clause 14.0 ¡§Unsatisfactory Performance and Discontinuation of Studies¡¨ of the General Regulations Governing Postgraduate Studies which can be accessed from the Graduate School Homepage: http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/gss.
  (d)
Complete an Improving Postgraduate Learning (IPL) module on ¡§Observing Intellectual Property and Copyright Law during Research¡¨. This will be an online module and relevant information can be accessed from the website: http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/clear/ipl/29.htm
(3) Remarks

  (b)
Students admitted to the Gender Studies/History Programme will be exempted from two elective courses.
 
* The field of World History covers Europe, America, Japan, Korea, Southeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific.

(1) Coursework Requirement
 
Students are required to complete a minimum of 24 units (for full-time students) / 30 units (for part-time students) of coursework for graduation.

    HIST6010 [HIS7010]  
  (b) Elective Courses:
9 units
    (i)
HIST5000- and HIST6000 [HIS7000]-level courses. At least 3 units of either ¡§Selected Themes¡¨, ¡§Reading Seminar¡¨, or ¡§Special Topics¡¨ courses, which have not been taken for credit before.
 
    (ii)
Subject to supervisor¡¦s approval, no more than 3 units of HIST6101 [HIS8011] ¡§Independent Studies¡¨ offered by supervisor, co-supervisor, or other teachers can be taken to fulfil the requirement in (i).
 
    (iii)
