Ph.D. in History Programme
Full-time and part-time programmes require 36 months and 48 months of research training respectively. Qualified candidates are required to submit a research thesis and undergo an oral examination. Students are expected to show competence in a third language other than English and Chinese.

Study Schemes


Applicable to students admitted in 2004-05 and thereafter
 
(1) Coursework Requirement:
 
Students with a research master's degree are required to complete a minimum of 33 units (for full-time students) / 39 units (for part-time students) of coursework for graduation.
  (a) Required Courses (6 units):
   
3 units of "Graduate Seminar on Historiography" (HIS8010) and 3 units of "Independent Studies" (HIS8011);
  (b) Elective Courses (9 units):
    (i)
HIS7000- or HIS5000-level courses, which are related to the major, first supporting and second supporting fields respectively, and have not been taken for credit before.
    (ii)
Subject to supervisor's approval, no more than 6 units of 3000-level courses, which are related to the major, first supporting and second supporting fields, can be taken to fulfill the requirement in (i).
    (iii)
A student may choose a discipline offered in another Division as the second supporting field. In such case, a graduate level course of 3 units offered by the Division concerned may replace the 3 units of coursework in the second supporting field.
  (c) Thesis Preparation [18 units (full-time) / 24 units (part-time)]:
   
Both full-time and part-time students are required to take HIS900T "Thesis Guidance" in each term until their theses are finally submitted. It carries a total of 3 ungraded pass-or-fail units in each term. The student's performance will be shown on record but will not be counted towards the calculation of GPA.
(2) Comprehensive/Qualifying Examination:
  (a)
After completion of at least 12 units of coursework, a student shall take and pass an oral qualifying examination before advancement to the Ph.D. candidature.
  (b)
The oral qualifying examination will cover the student's major and first supporting fields and will be conducted in accordance with regulations as laid down by the Division.
(3) Other Requirements:
 
Students are required to fulfill the following requirements for graduation:
 
(a)
A Ph.D. student is required to pass the "IT Proficiency Test". Please visit www.sitc.cuhk.edu.hk for details.
 
(b)
A Ph.D. student is required to study a third language, other than Chinese and English, at University level for 12 units or 156 hours with satisfactory result. This requirement may be waived if the student is able to demonstrate proficiency in that language to the satisfaction of the Division.
  (c)
All Ph.D. candidates should present at least one paper at a local workshop or international conference before completion of programme.
  (d)
After admission to Ph.D. candidature, the candidate is required to complete a thesis under the guidance of a supervisor, which will make a substantial contribution to the major field chosen in the programme of studies, and to pass an oral defence on the thesis.
  (e)
All Ph.D. students are required to complete an Improving Postgraduate Learning (IPL) module on "Observing Intellectual Property and Copyright Law during Research". This is an online module. Please visit www.cuhk.edu.hk/clear for further information.
(4) Remarks:
  (a)
In the early stage of study, a student will choose a major field, a first supporting and second supporting field from the fields of specialization listed below. An advisory committee consisting of one or two supervisors from the major field and one each from the first and second supporting fields will then be formed to supervise the student.
  (b) Fields of Specialization:
    (i) History of Traditional China
    (ii) History of Modern China
    (iii) Pre-modern World History*
    (iv) Modern World History*
    (v) History of Hong Kong
    (vi) Comparative History
    (vii) Public History
    * The field of World History covers Europe, America, Japan, Korea, Southeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific
  (c)
Students admitted to the Gender Studies/History Programme will be exempted from two elective courses.
 
Applicable to students admitted in 2002-03 and 2003-04
 
(1) Coursework Requirement:
 
A Ph.D. student is required to complete at least 33 units (for full-time students) / 39 units (for part-time students) of courses, including:
  (a) Required Courses (6 Units):
   
3 units of "Graduate Seminar on Historiography" (HIS6010) and 3 units of "Independent Studies" (HIS8011).

"Selected Themes in History" (HIS7000-) courses or upper-level undergraduate courses offered by the History Department which are related to the major field, and have not been taken for credit before.
    (ii)
"Selected Themes in History" (HIS7000-) courses or upper-level undergraduate courses offered by the History Department, which are related to the 1st and 2nd supporting fields respectively and have not been taken for credit before.
    (iii)
"Reading Seminar" courses.
    (iv)
A student may choose a discipline offered in another Division as the 2nd supporting field. In such case, a graduate level course of 3 units offered by the Division concerned may replace the 3 units of course work in the 2nd supporting field.

Comparative History and Public History are equivalent to various fields of specialization. Students may take Comparative History and Public History as equivalent to their required fields of specialization under the approval of the supervisor(s).
  (c)
Students may take upper-level undergraduate courses offered by the History Department as equivalent to their required fields of specialization under the approval of the supervisor(s).
  (d) Fields of Specialization:
