Important Matters for Research Postgraduate Students


Academic Matters

1.

For All Students

 

  • All students are required to take a (HIST8001) Thesis Guidance course in each term until their theses are finally submitted.

  • All students are required to complete 9 units of coursework in addition to the required courses. Subject to supervisor・s approval, student may choose to take no more than 3 units of HIST4000-level course. For students taking a course in the undergraduate curriculum, assignments for them are usually more research-oriented than that for undergraduates and are designed and given by the teachers concerned.

  • All students are required to complete Progress Report (Milestones) with approval by their supervisor(s) and the Division Head in September/October and May/June of each academic year.

  • A student who obtains a cumulative grade point average (GPA) below 2.0 in the preceding term or receives a failure grade in HIST8001 will be put on academic probation. A student cannot submit a thesis while on academic probation.

  • Travel grants are available for full-time regular postgraduate research students to conduct field research or to present paper(s) at regional or international conferences. Application should be made through the Division to the Graduate School.

  • All students have to pass the IT Proficiency Test administered by the University. Students are advised to inquire about the Test as early as possible. Please visit www.sitc.cuhk.edu.hk for details.

  • All students are required to complete the IPL course on :Observing Intellectual Property and Copyright Law during Research;. Please visit www.cuhk.edu.hk/clear for details.

  • Termination of studentship and study is regulated by guidelines of the Graduate School. Please visit the Graduate School・s Homepage for details.

   

2.

For All New Students (admitted in 2010-11 and thereafter)

 

  • Supervision: Choose a supervisor (and a co-supervisor, if so advised by the supervisor) as soon as possible and work out a study plan. Please return the Formation of Advisory Committee Form and the Tentative Thesis Title Record Form to Division Office by end-November.

  • Required course: All new students are required to complete HIST6010/7010 Graduate Seminar on Historiography, a course taught by the faculty members of History Department and/or visiting scholars.

  • Another required course: Ph.D. students are required to complete HIST7101 Independent Studies preferably offered by supervisor in Year 1.

   

3.

For Ph.D. Students Only

 
  • Fields of Study: Ph.D. students should choose a major field, 1st supporting field and 2nd supporting field from the fields of specialization of the programme. An advisory committee, which is composed of the supervisor(s) from the major field, one teacher from the 1st supporting field and one from the 2nd supporting field, will then be formed to supervise the student.

  • Students are advised to study the Study Scheme and the curriculum carefully and to make decision on their fields of specialization as early as they can. Please refer to the online Handbook at the Graduate School・s Homepage.

  • Qualifying Examination: Students are required to take a Qualifying Examination on field knowledge and thesis proposal before advancing to Ph.D. candidacy. Please contact the Division Office for details.

  • Students admitted in 2010-11 and thereafter are required to pass the Qualifying Examination within the maximum period appended below, on condition that such period should be not less than one year from the admission date and at least six months before the normative study end date.

  • With research Master・s degree:
    Full time: 24 months
    Part time: 32 months
    Without research Master・s degree:
    Full time: 36 months
    Part time: 48 months

  • Students should fulfill the Third Language Requirement as prescribed in the Study Scheme.

  • Students are required to present at least one paper at a local workshop or international conference before completion of programme.

- Up to a maximum of 20% of normative period of study

Department Chairman and Dean of Graduate School - Applicable to those who wish to attend conferences, collect data for research, conduct research overseas funded by Mainland Research Grant or Grant for Overseas Academic Activities etc.

- Application to be submitted to GS, with form to be obtained from GS or downloaded from website.
Leave with PGS Suspended Leave calculated on calendar day basis Department Chairman and Dean of Graduate School - Sufficient documentary proof required.
