 |
Commenced in 1998-1999, the M.Phil. Programme in Gender Studies at CUHK is Hong Kong's first
graduate programme in gender studies. This interdisciplinary programme combines expertise
from existing departments at CUHK including Anthropology, Chinese, English, Government and
Public Administration, History, Journalism, Nursing, Psychology, Religion and Sociology.
Students will enroll jointly in the Gender Studies M.Phil. Programme and the M.Phil. Programme of a home department.
Students write a thesis that combines gender studies with their home discipline. The
degrees that they eventually earn will be a joint one, such as Anthropology/Gender Studies, Psychology/
Gender Studies, or History/Gender Studies, etc.

Programme of Studies
Two Core seminars, GRS 5010 / 5020 Seminar in Gender Studies I and II
(3 units each), are required in the first year. Students will also need to complete the requirements of their
home departments, which may be lightened at the discretion of home departments.
In their second year, students have to meet the thesis requirements of their home departments. Student's
thesis committees will consist of members of both their home department and the Gender Studies
Programme. The thesis will use the academic methods and approaches characteristic of the student's
home department to explore a topic involving gender issues.
Seminars in Gender Studies I / II
These two seminars explore the study of gender through disciplines in the humanities and social
sciences. Among the topics examined are:
The cultural construction of men and women in historical and cross-cultural perspectives
gender identities and differences as represented in literature and the arts
sex roles, gender relations, gender socialization, and gender and power as examined in current social science research
and the shaping of gender-sensitive research, theoretical perspectives and research methodologies
Admission
Applications for admission to the M.Phil. Programme in Gender Studies should be sent to the Gender Studies Programme,

Gender Studies examines how we are socially and culturally constructed as "women" and "men", and how this shapes the way we live our lives and see the world.
Gender Studies has become an important area of academic investigation worldwide, in such disciplines as anthropology, psychology, sociology, history, law, literature, and religion.
The first undergraduate minor programme in Hong Kong has been offered since 1997-1998. Housed in the Department of
Anthropology, the Programme offers over 20 required and elective courses in various disciplines.
