In a museum which regularly changes its exhibits, a guide has a vital part to play in interpreting items on display and placing them in the context of Chinese culture, as well as encouraging visitors to return and sample the rich variety on offer.  In 1997, supported by the Director and Curators of the Art Museum, the Friends embarked upon a docent training programme for members keen to develop skills which would enable them to guide the permanent collection and special exhibitions.

In March 1999, a second training programme commenced, with 33 participants.  The training course covered Chinese history, religion and philosophy, art history and presentation skills, as well as the essential focus on items from the permanent collection, such as seals, bronzes, jades, ceramics, painting and calligraphy. Docents now freguently guide groups from Hong Kong organisations and overseas visitors, as well as fellow members of the Friends.
