The Art Museum,
was founded in 1971. and until ten years ago was known as the Art Gallery.
In 1980 J.S. Lee, of the Bei Shan Tang Foundation, approached Madeleine
Tang, Irene Dunning, and seven other ladies to solicit their support
to expand the Gallery. Together they formed a group called The Friends
of the Art Gallery, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, based on similar
groups in the United States and England.

After drawing
up a constitution, the Friends was inaugurated on Friday, October 16,
1981. A committee of five was formed and membership numbered ten. Within
a year there were more than 100 members. Today, the internationally
diverse membership count is near 500 and the Friends is a strong and
viable support group for the Art Museum, benefiting the public and students
