New Deans for Faculties of Business Administration and Social Science at CUHK


          The Faculty of Business Administration and the Faculty of Social Science of The Chinese University of Hong Kong have elected Professor LEE Tien Sheng, Chairman and Professor at the Department of Decision Sciences and Managerial Economics, and Professor LEUNG Yee, Professor of Geography and Resource Management, as their new deans respectively, effective from 1 August 2002.

          Professor LEE obtained his PhD in Business Administration (majoring in Production and Operations Management) from the University of Missouri-Columbia (UMC).  He also holds an MBA from UMC, an MS in Management Science and a BS in Electronic Engineering from Taiwan Chiao-Tung University.

          His research interests include production and inventory management, material requirements planning, master production scheduling, and quality management.  He is a prolific writer and has published in many international academic journals.

          Professor LEE first came to CUHK in 1989 as a visiting scholar.  However, he liked it so much that he rejoined CUHK in January 1992 and has been here ever since.  He was appointed Chairman of the Decision Sciences and Managerial Economics Department in the fall semester of 1998.  Prior to rejoining CUHK, he was Chairman of the Management Department at the University of Utah for two years.  He taught at UU for six years and at Bowling Green State University, Ohio for three years.  Before his academic career, he worked for the State of Missouri's Public Service Commission as Load Forecasting Manager and for Texas Instruments (Taiwan) as a Product Process Engineer.

          He has been actively involved in professional community service in the past two decades.  He was President of the Asia-Pacific Chapter of the Decision Sciences Institute between 1998 and 1999, and has just finished a two-year term as the Vice-President (representing the Asia-Pacific Region) of DSI.  Since 1989, he has been actively engaged in academic exchange with scholars on the Mainland.  He is currently Visiting/Consultant Professor for Nankai University, Tianjin University, Southeast University (Nanjing), and Southwest Jiaotung University (Chengdu).

          Professor LEUNG Yee received his Bachelor of Social Science in Geography from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, his MA and PhD degrees in Geography and MS in Operations Research and Systems Engineering from The University of Colorado, USA.

          He is currently Professor of Geography, Research Fellow of The Centre for Environmental Policy and Resource Management, Deputy Academic Director of The Joint Laboratory for Geoinformation Science of The Chinese University of Hong Kong and The Chinese Academy of Science, and Visiting/Consultant Professor of several universities on the Mainland.  A prolific social scientist, Professor LEUNG has published five monographs and more than 100 articles in international academic journals and book chapters.  His areas of specialization cover the development and application of intelligent spatial decision support systems, spatial optimization, fuzzy sets and logic for spatial analysis, geocomputation, spatial data mining and knowledge discovery.  Since 1990, he has had over 20 research projects on the above areas funded by various organizations including the Hong Kong Research Grants Council, Service Support Fund of Hong Kong SAR, and The Croucher Foundation.

          Professor LEUNG serves in the editorial boards of several international academic journals and is council member of several Chinese professional organizations, including The Association of Chinese Geographers and Chinese Association of Geographical Information Systems.  He is the Chairman of the International Geographical Union - Hong Kong Committee, and Secretary of the Commission on Modelling Geographical Systems, International Geographical Union.  Professor LEUNG is also active in public services and has served as member of the Town Planning Board and Environmental Pollution Advisory Committee.  Within the University, he is active in organizing or taking part in social functions and extracurricular activities and has served in numerous University and College committees.
