Biography of Professor Cheng Siwei | Video of public lecture and seminar


Professor Cheng Siwei, the Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress was appointed by the Chinese University as Honorary Professor of the Faculty of Business Administration. Professor Cheng gave a public lecture on "Current Issues in Economic Reforms and Development in China" on 31 March at TY Wong Hall. The lecture attracted an audience of over 300, including Secretary for Justice Elsie Leung, Executive Councillor Laura Cha, Securities and Futures Commission Hong Kong Chairman Andrew Sheng and MTRC Chairman CK Chow.

In his lecture, Professor Cheng talked about three major tasks for China, its transition to a socialist market economy, and what he hoped China will achieve by 2020. He highlighted major challenges faced by the China in its development, including economic overheating and inefficient investment. He also discussed possible solutions including macroeconomic control measures, improvement of the social security system, transformation of the rural labor force, improving financial systems, and changing the role of government.

During the lecture, Professor Lawrence J. Lau, Vice-Chancellor of the Chinese University, presented a certificate of appointment to Professor Cheng, and expressed his gratitude to Professor Cheng for agreeing to serve as an honorary professor of the Faculty of Business Administration. CUHK expects to leverage the valuable fruits and experience from Professor Cheng's scholarly research on management sciences to further enhance the university's teaching and research capabilities. Through Professor Cheng, the university also wishes to strengthen co-operation in teaching and research with the Chinese Academy of Sciences in future.

Professor Cheng also chaired the seminar "Status and Perspectives of Management Sciences in China" with staff and students of the Faculty of Business Administration. Professor Cheng has been very supportive of the university. He has co-operated with the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Business Administration, strongly promoting research and co-operation between the mainland and Hong Kong in the area of management sciences. In 1998, he was the keynote speaker of the "Founding Ceremony of the Asia Academy of Management" organized by the Department of Management of the Faculty of Business Administration.
