平衡基金加入新的基金經理

鑑於霸菱資產管理(亞洲)有限公司在直至二零零五年第三季的一年內,投資成績未符理想,回報持續低於指標,故此大學公積金計劃受託人邀請了三間投資經理連同「霸菱」,提交服務建議書及於本年一月與受託人見面及商討有關建議。基於建議書內容及商討結果,受託人最後決定委任德盛安聯資產管理香港有限公司,與
「霸菱」共同管理平衡基金,期望這樣的安排能引致良性競爭,提升整體的投資表現,令選擇此基金的成員受惠。事實上,自去年第四季後,「霸菱」的表現有明顯進步,投資回報連續六個月均高於指標。

由二零零六年五月一日起,平衡基金的整體投資回報率將會包括「霸菱」及「德盛安聯」兩個基金經理管理的成果,並以此回報率計算及分帳至相關成員的戶口。選擇平衡基金的成員將會同時受惠於兩個基金經理的專業知識。

Pleased be informed that the form for investment option change effective on 1st May 2006 is now downloadable from the Bursary website at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/bursary/ optionform and obtainable from the Payroll and Superannuation Unit of the Bursary. The completed form should be sent by mail or fax (2603 7890) for receipt by the unit on or before 20th April 2006 (Thursday).

The forums will be held from 12.30 p.m. to 2.00 p.m. in Room 103D, John Fulton Centre. Light lunch will be provided. Attendance is highly recommended.

• Addition of New Investment Manager for Balanced Fund

As Baring Asset Management (Asia) Limited had consistently underperformed against the benchmark for a year until the third quarter of 2005, the trustees solicited new proposals and interviewed three new managers, together with Baring, in January 2006. Based on their submissions and presentation, the trustees made the decision to add Allianz Global Investors Hong Kong Limited to share the Balanced Fund with Baring. This arrangement will encourage competition between the two managers, which is expected to benefit the fund. In fact, Baring's performance has since improved and has been consistently above the benchmark in the last six months.

The total returns and income distribution of the Balanced Fund will be based on the combined investment results of both Baring and Allianz. When choosing to invest in the Balanced Fund, members will be subject to the investment expertise of both managers. This arrangement will be effective from 1st May 2006.


哈佛燕京學社進修資助計劃
Scholarships/Fellowships at the Harvard-Yenching Institute

哈佛燕京學社現接受本校人文學科及社會科學教員申請二零零七至零八年度進修資助計劃。

(一) 訪問學人資助計劃
此計劃資助教員前往哈佛大學進修或從事研究工作,為期十一個月。申請人於遞交申請時必須末滿四十二歲。資助項目包括單人來回機票、生活津貼(以十一個月為限)、醫療及學術研討會津貼。
(二) 訪問研究員資助計劃
此計劃資助博士研究生前往哈佛大學從事研究工作,為期十個月。從事有關東亞研究之申請人將獲優先考慮。申請者須參加托福考試(TOEFL)。資助項目包括交通、訪問研究員津貼、生活津貼及學術研討會津貼。
(三) 博士研究獎學金計劃
此計劃資助資歷較淺之教員前往哈佛大學或其他海外大學進修博士學位課程。申請者須參加托福考試(TOEFL)及報考美國大學畢業生試(GRE),並獲哈佛或其他海外大學錄取為博士研究生(錄取通知書可於稍後呈交)。獎學金為期一學年,期滿可申請延期。資助項目包括交通、學費、醫療及生活津貼。

申請人須把申請表格及有關文件,於二零零六年五月十三日或以前經有關學系系主任及學院院長送交培訓事務經理周偉榮先生,俾轉呈教師審議委員會考慮。有關申請表格可於人事處網頁https://perntc.per.cuhk.edu.hk/personnel/external.asp下載。

Applications/nominations are now invited from faculty members in the Humanities and Social Sciences for the following three Harvard-Yenching Programmes tenable in 2007-08:

  1. Visiting Scholars Programme
    This programme offers younger faculty members in the Humanities and Social Sciences the opportunity to undertake 11 months of study and research at Harvard University. Applicants must be 42 years of age or younger at the date of application. The scholarship will cover round-trip transportation by air for the scholar; a stipend of US$2,940 per month for the period of residence in Cambridge, Massachusetts (up to 11 months); fees for health insurance and the use of the Harvard clinic; and funding for one-time participation in an academic conference within the USA.
  2. Visiting Fellows Programme
    This programme provides advanced Ph.D. candidates (graduate students and junior faculty members) an opportunity to do dissertation research at Harvard University for three semesters. Preference is given to junior faculty members working in East Asian Studies. TOEFL score is required for submission to the institute. The fellowship will cover transportation to and from Cambridge, Massachusetts; payment of the Harvard University Visiting Fellows fee; a stipend adequate for a single scholar; and funding for one-time participation in an academic conference within the USA.
  3. Doctoral Scholarship Programme
    This programme allows junior faculty members to study abroad for a Ph.D. in the Humanities and Social Sciences at one of the major universities in the United States and other countries. Applications for the institute scholarships are separate from applications for admission to graduate programmes. TOEFL score and GRE report are required for submission to the institute. Scholarships are given for a period of one academic year and are renewable for up to three and half years. The scholarship will cover transportation to and from Cambridge, Massachusetts, if attending Harvard University (in the case of another university, to and from that university); tuition; health insurance; and a living stipend (stipend will be adjusted according to the local cost of living and other sources of support. The grant is adequate for the support of a single scholar.)

Nominees should submit a Summary of Submission (PO/SR3), also obtainable from the above website, together with the completed application forms and requisite supporting documents, with the endorsement of the department chairman/unit head and the faculty dean as appropriate, to Mr. Daniel Chow, training manager, on or before 13th May 2006 for consideration by the Academic Staff Review Committee. After the University has submitted its nominations to the Harvard-Yenching Institute, the nominated applicants will be interviewed by a representative of the institute in Hong Kong in the fall of 2006. Three Self-access e-Learning Programs to Improve English

The Independent Learning Centre (ILC) has acquired three e-Learning
programs for use by staff and students of CUHK. Five users are allowed to use each program concurrently.

Obituary

物業管理處一級校工陳波仔先生於二零零六年三月十七日辭世。陳先生於一九九六年加入本校服務。

Mr. Chan Po Chai, Janitor I at the Estates Management Office, passed away on 17th March 2006. Mr. Chan joined the University in 1996.
