Since 1987 Professor Ewald M. Hennig is a Professor for Biomechanics at the Department of Human Movement Science at the University of Essen, Germany. He has a Diploma in Physics from the University of Frankfurt, Germany (1975) and received his PhD in Biomechanics from the College of Health and Human Development at the Pennsylvania State University, USA (1984). After his return to Germany he worked for threee years in the Department of Physical Education at the University of Konstanz before becoming director of the biomechanics laboratory at the University of Essen.
Based on various national and international patents, Professor Ewald M. Hennig has introduced new biomedical technologies for the measurement of mechanical and cardiac quantities. Especially, his technology on the measurement of pressure distribution is now widely used in orthopedics and biomechanical research. The main focus of his research during the past 20 years has been the biomechanics of the human foot in adults and children, in obese patients, and patients with neuromotor disabilities (Parkinson´s disease, Hemiparesis, Diabetes). His efforts also concentrated on sports injury prevention by applying research findings to shoe and equipment design (e.g. tennis racket, athletic footwear). More recent research concentrates on the role of the foot as a sensory organ for the postural control in the elderly and patients with neuromotor disabilities.
Professor Ewald M. Hennig has written over 250 scientific academic papers and chapters in books, from which more than 40 have been published in refereed international journals. He was the first chairman of the Functional Footwear Group of the International Society of Biomechanics (1998–2001), and he is on the board for consumer health of the government supported German Consumer Product Agency (Stiftung Warentest). |
