StarOffice is a product of SUN. SUN granted a free license to The Chinese University of Hong Kong to use on SUN Desktop Application Software. The current version for free downloading applies to version 8.

StarOffice 8 software supports unicode and extensive Asian language support on Windows, Linux and Solaris.

1. Introduction

What is StarOffice 8?

StarOffice 8 is an alternative office suite on Windows that provides features and tools similar to Microsoft Office. StarOffice software is full-featured with word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, drawing and HTML document. It also provides Adabas as an add-on database functionality. In addition, it enables PDF conversion and exports to the Macromedia Flash format. We are introducing StarOffice for personal use. For department users, please refer to the University Software Standards for the current recommended software standards.

Do I have to pay for the software?

No. It is free to all staff and student with valid CU-Link card.

To be eligible for a free license of the software, you must meet these reqirements:

  1. Staff with valid CU-Link
  2. Student with valid CU-Link

No. The software should be used for academics and administrative purpose and for non-commercial use.

Work in Office Use

  1. University-owned computers
  2. University's teaching Lab

  5. Students' laptop/notebook
  6. University's resnet computers

Work at Home Use


  1. Staff's home personal computer
  2. Students' home personal computer
  3. To exercise the Work at Home Use, staff and student are allowed to download one copy of the software at home and required to make an online registration and accept the terms of the Agreement.

    Sun's decision to provide this program to Academic and Administrative Users is subject to Sun's sole discretion and can be terminated at any time by Sun.

Can I continue to use StarOffice at home if I am no longer a CU staff or student?

No. If you are no longer a CU staff or student. you should uninstall StarOffice from your owned desktop and laptop/notebook at home.

Download StarOffice at home

To download StarOffice at home via ResNet, ClassNet or public ISP connection, you need to access through a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection and login the system using your Campus-wide E-mail System (CWEM) computing id and password.
